The SUFLE full-time French courses are designed for non-French-speaking foreign adults, from complete beginners to experienced users, holders of a secondary school qualification (diploma giving access to university) or any higher diploma.

1. Calendar 2019/2020

The academic year is divided into 2 independent semesters: the student can enrol for the 1st semester (September-December), the 2nd semester (January-April) or the full academic year (September-April).

There is only one week of vacation each semester, in October and February (see SUFLE calendar).

  • 1st semester: from September 9 to December 13, 2019
  • 2nd semester: from January 13 to April 17, 2020

WARNING: We're sorry to inform you that pre-registrations for the 2nd semester are now closed, due to a strong demand. From November 5, 2020, all requests will be put on the waiting list. Please wait for confirmation from us before paying the pre-registration fee of 300€ (not refundable).

2. Teaching programs

University Diploma (DU) in French Language and Culture

This full-time course is diploma awarding course: it leads to the Diplôme d'Aix-Marseille University of French Language and Culture. This diploma provides 30 ECTS credits (European credits) per semester for 18 hours of class per week. Attendance is mandatory.

Course organization

Training of 18 hours of classes per week (subject to calendar constraints) with the possibility of taking an additional 2 or 3 hours workshop (20h or 21h/week), see the prices at the end of the page.

The hours of the courses are distributed differently depending on the level:

  • Language courses (between 10 hours and 14h30 per week): Oral and written comprehension; Oral and written expression;
  • A phonetics course (1h30 per week, only for beginners to intermediate levels);
  • Choice of thematic workshops (between 2 and 8 hours of workshops per week).

At the end of each semester, the students receive a transcript of records and those who have met the requirements of the Diploma also receive the "Diplôme Universitaire de Langue et Culture françaises de l'Université d'Aix-Marseille" for the level they have completed. See details in the exam regulations.

Students are placed in language groups accordingto their level (maximum 20 students per group). Qualified and experienced teachers support 6 different levels, aligned with the levels defined by the Council of Europe (CEFRL).

For more details on the organization of the courses, download the training booklet brochure (2017-2021).

3. Registration procedures

Download the registration form (opposite), where the necessary supporting documents and the bank details of the SUFLE (RIB/IBAN) are indicated.

A deposit of 300 € is required for the pre-registration (non-refundable).
WARNING: Pre-registrations for the 2nd semester are now closed (see above).

You can send the necessary documents for the pre-registration by email or bring them to the SUFLE secretariat.
The final registration is done upon your arrival.

4. Time schedule

The schedules for each level are only available after the placement tests.
They are available at the beginning of the semester on the Latest news from SUFLE page.

Please note: Schedules may change, check the rooms and schedules regularly.

4.1 Choice of workshops

Once you know the group in which you are placed, you will need to choose your workshop(s).

Please note: the number of workshops to choose depends on the group in which you are placed.

Be sure to respect the number of workshops to be chosen according to the group (A1, A2, etc.).
Registration in the workshops is done via the Gigue platform. Consult the Gigue procedure (how to register): in French or English.
The descriptions of the workshops are indicated on Gigue.

5. Assessment

Students are assessed throughout the semester by continuous assessment grades, then at the end of the semester by a final exam for the language course.

More than 3 unjustified absences (= not justified by an official document such as medical certificate, various convocations, etc...) cancel the continuous control note.
The final exam assesses the 4 language skills (written and oral comprehension, written and oral expression). These exams are absolutely mandatory for obtaining the French language course marks.

For more details, consult the exam rules.

IMPORTANT: In accordance with the law, only one copy of transcripts and diplomas may be issued. No duplicates (doubles) will be provided.
