Full-time training - French courses

The SUFLE full-time French courses are designed for non-French-speaking foreign adults, from complete beginners to experienced users, holders of a secondary school qualification (diploma giving access to university) or any higher diploma.

The SUFLE will be closed during the summer holidays from 24 July to 21 August 2020, inclusive.

SUFLE's full-time French courses are open to all non-French-speaking foreign adults, from complete beginners to experienced users, holders of a secondary school certification (diploma giving access to university) or any higher diploma.

1. Calendar

The academic year is divided into 2 independent semesters: the student can register either for the 1st semester (September-December), for the 2nd semester (January-April) or for the full academic year (September-April).

There is one week's vacation each semester, in October and February (see the SUFLE Calendar).

Calendar 2020/2021

  • 1st semester: September 7 to December 11, 2020
    Registrations are now closed.
  • 2nd semester: from January 11 to April 16, 2021

2. Teaching formulas

University Diploma (DU) of French Language and Culture

This full-time training is a diploma program: it gives access to the University Diploma in French Language and Culture. This diploma corresponds to 30 ECTS credits (European credits) per semester for 18 hours of classes per week.

Organization of the courses

Training of 18 hours per week (subject to calendar constraints), with the possibility of upgrading to 20h or 21h/week by taking an additional workshop of 2 or 3 hours (see prices at the end of this page).

The course hours are distributed differently according to level:

  • Language courses (between 10h and 14h30 per week): Oral and written comprehension; Oral and written expression; Oral and written expression.
  • A phonetics course (1h30 per week, only for beginners to intermediate levels)
  • Choice of thematic workshops (between 2 and 8 hours of workshops per week)

At the end of each semester, students receive a transcript of grades and can obtain the "Diplôme Universitaire (DU) de Langue et Culture françaises" from the University of Aix-Marseille for the level they have completed.

Students are placed in language groups adapted to their level (maximum 20 students per group). Qualified and experienced teachers are in charge of 6 different levels, in line with the levels defined by the Council of Europe (CEFR).

3. How to register

Download the registration form (opposite), where the requested documents are indicated.
If your application is accepted, you will be asked to pay a 300 € pre-registration deposit (non-refundable).
WARNING: Please wait for the validation of your application file before any payment.

The final registration is done upon your arrival.

You may send the documents to be provided by e-mail (indicated on the form) or bring them to the SUFLE student office (Warning: university is currently closed to the public).

4. Time schedule

Schedules for each level are only available after the placement tests, and can be consulted at the beginning of each semester on this news page.
CAUTION: Schedules are subject to change, check classrooms and schedules regularly.

Choice of workshops

Once you know the group you are placed in, you will need to choose your workshop(s).
Please note: the number of workshops to choose from depends on the group you are placed in. Be sure to respect the number of workshops to be chosen according to the group (A1, A2, etc.).

Workshop registrations are made through the Gigue Platform. Consult the Gigue procedure (how to register): in French or in English.

5. Evaluation

Students are evaluated throughout the semester by continuous assessment marks, and then at the end of the semester by a final exam for the language course. These exams are absolutely mandatory to obtain the grades of the French Language course and attendance at classes is compulsory.

IMPORTANT: In accordance with the law, only one copy of transcripts and diplomas may be issued. No duplicates (doubles) will be provided.

NEWS: The DU diplomas (2nd semester 2019/2020) are available. They will be sent by mail to all students who request them (Contact Form, select "Cours annuels/semestriels"). Remember to indicate your postal address.

6. Tariffs 2020/2021

  • One semester = 1450 € (groups* : 1300 €)
  • Academic year = 2400 € (groupes* : 2200 €)
  • Additional workshop = 150 € (2h workshop) and 225 € (3h workshop) per semester

Reduced rates for organizations (universities, agencies, companies...) enrolling 10 people or more. Please contact us beforehand (Contact Form, select "Cours pour organismes"):

NB. The above prices do not include Health Insurance (compulsory for non-European students over 28 years old) or Civil Insurance.

Exemption scheme (reserved for asylum seekers or refugees) :

The University of Aix-Marseille welcomes and trains asylum seekers/refugees since 2015-2016 within SUFLE.
They can benefit from an exemption from tuition fees, by way of derogation, within the limit of 10% of the number of students per semester (i.e. about thirty places) after constitution of a file which will be examined by an evaluation committee.

PLEASE NOTE: Only one session per year for the submission of applications is organised. The deadline for submitting applications is usually mid-June.
For the year 2020/2021, the deadline is June 12, 2020.
