Health-related procedures

Health-related formalities are essential and must be anticipated. Depending on your nationality, you may need to apply for a European Health Insurance Card, or join the French Social security system once you arrive in France.

Procedure for European students - EHIC

Students who hold the nationality of a country in the European Union, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway or Switzerland can apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in their home country. This means they don't need to register with the French social security system.

Procedure for non-European students - CPAM

As a non-European international student, you must register with the French Social Security. Joining the Social Security is free and compulsory for students moving to France. It ensures that your healthcare costs are covered for the duration of your studies. You must register as soon as you arrive in France, following your administrative registration at university.

To join the French Social Security system and benefit from the coverage of your health care costs, you will need to subscribe to the general health insurance scheme (Régime Général de l'Assurance Maladie) by following the steps below:

  1. Register on the site dedicated to welcoming international students as soon as your administrative registration at amU has been finalized;
  2. Submit the required supporting documents;
  3. Download your provisional social security certificate. You are now insured;
  4. Submit additional supporting documents in your temporary online account;
  5. As soon as you receive your final social security number, create your account on the ameli.fr website and request your carte Vitale (health insurance card);
  6. Declare a preferred physician on your first consultation (this will facilitate reimbursement of your healthcare costs).

Complimentary health insurance

The Social Security will reimburse around 60% of your healthcare costs. To optimize reimbursement of the remaining 30%, you can take out complementary health insurance, also known as a mutuelle.

This is not compulsory, but it is recommended. A number of "student" insurance companies offer complementary health insurance for students.

Health insurance

A word of advice: make sure that the complimentary insurance company you choose includes civil liability insurance. This will ensure that you are covered at your place of study and internship for all everyday accidents.

Inter-university preventive medicine and health promotion service

The university also has its own student health service: the SSE. Students have free access to general practitioners, nurses, psychologists, a relaxation therapist and, depending on availability, student trainees in odontology (dentistry).

For more information, visit the SSE page.
