The transition to carbon-free is a major societal issue in view of the ongoing climate change. Nuclear energy, which does not produce greenhouse gases, has an important role to play in this transition and beyond, with in particular the prospect of the harnessing the energy of stars, through fusion reactions.
The institute fosters training and research in fusion sciences, nuclear instrumentation, structure, and the mechanical characterisation of materials and structures for fission and fusion, with an interdisciplinary approach, including societal aspects. Over the next 10 years, the institute aims to make the Aix-Marseille site the European reference for training through research on these themes, in relation with the international partners present on the site (ITER and the partners of the Jules Horowitz Reactor).
