OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

The disciplinary field of "law and economics", also known as "economic analysis of law", emerged in the USA in the 1960s, before taking root in Europe in the 1980s. The first academics working on law and economics in Europe joined forces to create the European Masters in Law and Economics (EMLE) in 1990, as part of an Erasmus study program. This initiative came only 6 years after the creation of the European Law and Economics Association (EALE) in 1984, to enable this research network to offer excellent teaching in law and economics at Master's level.

The aim of the program is to provide a one-year international and interdisciplinary Master's degree (60 ECTS). It is divided into 3 academic terms, with mobility possible between 9 partner universities (7 European and 2 non-European). An average of 80 students are accepted each year. They choose between 3 universities to study at in the 1st term (Haifa, Hamburg, Rotterdam), 3 universities in the 2nd term (Gent, Hamburg, Rotterdam) and 6 universities in the 3rd term (Aix-en-Provence, Barcelona, Mumbai, Hamburg, Rome and Warsaw). 3 specialization tracks are available. These specializations are closely linked to the objectives of the Erasmus+ program and the EU: 1) innovation and intellectual property, 2) public and international law (including EU law), 3) market, competition and regulation.

Courses and supervision of Master's theses are taught by top-level international academics, ensuring a close link between teaching and academic research. EMLE's maximum capacity is 105 students, limiting class size to a maximum of 35 students per course. In this way, students benefit from a more focused, active academic learning experience. Interested students can follow an internship offered by EMLE's associate partners (consulting firms and agencies), after defending their dissertation.

The innovative aspect: Lawyers and economists have everything to gain from studying the interdisciplinary field of law and economics. They can better understand the incentives provided by legal rules and, consequently, formulate policy recommendations on the alternative legal arrangement to be favored to achieve a given societal objective. They can understand how and why legal institutions are important to the functioning of an economy, and can make recommendations on issues such as the independence of the judiciary and the protection of private property rights. They study the different forms of market failure that exist in real life, and the possible role of law in remedying them. They study the possible sources of regulatory failures. These skills are in high demand.

A significant achievement of the project: all graduating students receive a joint degree and, depending on their location, may receive one or two additional (multiple) degrees. All graduates receive a joint diploma supplement.
Alumni work in all professions where law and economics are relevant, from academia to policymakers (government bodies) to the private sector (consultancies, law firms and international corporations). They are also present in international organizations such as the European Commission, the European Central Bank, the World Bank, the OECD, UNCTAD, the German Bundeskartellamt and the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority.
