DCS - Culture and Society Department

The Culture and Society Department implements AMU's political commitment to place the arts and culture at the centre of its concerns in terms of research, training and living well together. For our university, these are undeniably sources of creativity, links, sharing and values because they are accessible to all and for all.

At the same time, this commitment responds to the decree of 13 September 2018 encouraging universities to strengthen their cultural and artistic actions, and to the mission letter of the Minister of Culture of 7 September 2020 encouraging universities to better guarantee access to culture for all our fellow citizens and to make culture a lever for the attractiveness of the territory. The missions of the Department of Culture and Society are based on 3 axes:

  • Axis 1: Attractiveness and living well together.

AMU will continue to develop collective practices by offering the entire university community the choice of a high-level cultural offer through its artistic ensembles (OSAMU, O'JAZZ AMU, DANSE'AMU, EV'AMU, CHORAMU) in conjunction with the territory's cultural partners.

AMU will continue to assert itself in the territorial institutional landscape by participating in major events and will also promote its cultural policy at national and international level (CIVIS).

  • Axis 2: Transmission Student life and citizenship

AMU wishes to transmit the values of solidarity and sharing, through the deployment of free workshops for amateur artistic practice in different disciplines (theatre, plastic arts, singing, dance...) and on several dedicated sites, spaces and venues (theatre, documentation centres, arts and culture workshops, the Cube in Aix-en-Provence, the Hexagone in Marseille).

Supporting student cultural initiatives, encouraging student commitment and citizenship, developing the integration of international students, with a view to an intercultural mix are all important actions to be carried out as well as the accessibility of cultural places to students thanks to the strengthening of partnerships framing mediation and price offers with the PACTE'AMU scheme.

The university will be attentive to the fact that culture has a transversal role in relation to sustainable development and sport in particular.

  • Axis 3: Research training and interdisciplinarity.

The major universities in the world have placed culture at the centre of their development.

Thus, AMU, with its strong academic and scientific potential, aims to be a real training and research scene, encouraging a break with disciplinary culture, promoting the transgression of the frontiers of knowledge, voluntarily and deliberately marking new rules to provide innovative responses to major societal issues and build tomorrow.

To this end, it will continue to respond to calls for tenders in the field of cultural creative industries, to initiate reflections on the links between the arts and sciences and to develop its festivals and major conferences.

The new team will also be committed to enriching AMU's cultural network and bring out new ideas that will benefit everyone.

The team of the Culture and Society Department is at the disposal of the entire community to support, enhance and build all projects in the service of the university's cultural policy.
