One of the missions of the Institut Sociétés en Mutation en Méditerranée (SoMuM) is to set up a range of training programs, from Master's level through to doctoral studies. Within this framework, SoMuM publishes calls for projects specifically dedicated to doctoral students within its perimeter, designed to enhance doctoral training, strengthen training through research, and promote professional integration, with a view to opening up to the international arena.

The aim of this call for applications is to enable doctoral students wishing to obtain the "European Doctorate" label to spend the required three months in Europe. The Institut pays an international mobility grant to doctoral students wishing to spend three months in a European research laboratory or university, as part of their thesis preparation.

A genuine complement to the doctorate diploma, the "European Doctorate" label adds the recognition of a European dimension. This label applies to the national doctoral diploma (excluding cotutelles) and gives it an international scope/dimension, provided that the eligibility conditions are met. The label is certified separately from the doctorate.
