For its second edition, the Aix-Marseille University grant for scientific culture projects has received 10 projects-candidates from various disciplinary fields (archaeology, arts, astronomy, biodiversity, economics, ethnography, history, mathematics) for a total budget of €10,000. The selection committee chose 4 projects to be carried out in 2020 by the university's laboratories:

  • An "autumn school", in favour of gender equality and social diversity in scientific and mathematical careers. Between research workshops in mathematics, sports activities, conferences and artistic performances, this school project called "Les cigales" offers 20 high school students from the Aix-Marseille Academy the opportunity to spend a week on the Luminy campus supervised by researchers, teacher-researchers and doctoral students from Aix-Marseille University (I2M and LIS). This project is supported by the Institut de Mathématiques de Marseille.

  • A musical, photographic and theatrical show on the life of the Zabbalîn, the waste pickers in Cairo. "The circular economy that already exists" is a creation inspired by the ethnographic work of Jamie Furniss and narrated by the violinist Christian Stejskalet. It highlights current research on representations, practices and techniques related to the production and management of waste in the contemporary Maghreb. This theatrical itinerant project is carried out by the Institute for Research on Contemporary Maghreb in collaboration with A*Midex.

  • Film screenings followed by debates between citizens, researchers and artists. Through a programme of films produced by researchers and artists on themes related to current scientific and societal issues, this cycle of film-debates aims to contribute to the dialogue between science and society. This project is led by PRISM, the Perception, Image, Sound and Music Perception Laboratory, in partnership with the Cinémas du sud & tilt association.

  • A travelling exhibition on childhood and youth in Yemen. Iconographies, musical and poetic compositions open the doors to education, street art, sport, play, work, culture and popular traditions in Yemen, a country now plagued by armed conflict. Combining documentary resources from research with productions from Yemeni civil society, the exhibition "Journey through childhood and youth in Yemen from 1950 to the present day" promises a historical and poetic immersion in this country on the Arabian Peninsula. This project is supported by the Institute for Research and Studies on the Arab and Muslim Worlds - IREMAM.
