Creation of the "PACA Dental" chair: Aix-Marseille Université and Biotech Dental join forces in the field of implantable medical devices

As a structuring element of a collaboration of several years at the interface between biomechanics and modeling of the human body at the service of dental implantology, orthodontics, and dental and maxillofacial surgery, Biotech Dental and Aix-Marseille Université (AMU), via the Laboratory of Applied Biomechanics and the School of Dental Medicine of the Faculty of Medical and Paramedical Sciences, have joined forces to create the "PACA Dental" chair for a period of five years. This agreement, set up with the Protisvalor teams, marks the desire of Biotech Dental, a company based in Salon de Provence, to establish itself in the region.

Wednesday, June 2, 2021 - 10am

The creation agreement was signed by Mr. Eric Berton, President of AMU and Mr. Philippe Veran, President of Biotech Dental with the support of Mr. Bruno Foti, Director of the School of Dental Medicine, Mr. Laurent Badih, President of Glad, Mr. Bruno Marroni, Director of Protisvalor, and Mr. Pierre-Jean Arnoux, Director of the Laboratory of Applied Biomechanics (LBA)

This chair will enable them to federate their research and development potential around the LBA-CERC Biomechanics and Medical Platform on Virtual Man and the School of Dentistry in order to develop technological solutions and offer scientific and technical expertise on the problems of implantable medical devices, particularly in dental, orthodontic and maxillofacial surgery and implantology.

It will materialize in particular through :

  • A research partnership in "engineering, design, development and optimization of implantable prostheses".
  • The reception of personnel in the premises of the various stakeholders.
  • Possible joint actions with the faculties of medical and paramedical sciences, and of dentistry.
  • The setting up of training activities, both punctual for short-term needs and diploma courses for medium and long-term needs.

This event will be held behind closed doors, in compliance with the health measures in force.

About Biotech Dental

With 30 years of experience and a presence in some forty countries, the Biotech Dental group has become a leading French player in the field of health. The company is now one of the leaders in the dental implantology market.
Focused on new technologies, the group is constantly diversifying its product range in order to offer its customers a global and digital solution. Today Biotech Dental is the reference company in the dental market through an offer of exclusive digital products and services: design and manufacture of implants and dental prostheses, intra-oral scanner, smile analysis software, custom-made transparent aligners manufactured by innovative digital manufacturing processes as well as associated training.

About Protisvalor

Protisvalor is the research development subsidiary of Aix-Marseille Université. Created in 2002 to provide AMU laboratories and researchers with the support they need to develop their skills and research results, Protisvalor operates in the legal, administrative, financial and intellectual property fields.
Protisvalor's main mission is to ensure the instruction and management of funded contracts. This implies advising, guiding and accompanying researchers throughout the life cycle of their research projects.
We act on several levels: monitoring and detection, financial engineering, project engineering and set-up, negotiation and drafting of intellectual property contracts, accounting management, administrative and financial management, and human resources management.

About the School of Dental Medicine - Faculty of Medical and Paramedical Sciences

The young School of Dentistry is a new "component" of the Faculty of Medical and Paramedical Sciences since January 1st (integration of the UFR of Odontology). It is in charge of the pre-clinical and clinical training of 400 students in initial training, by 67 university hospital teachers and 20 administrative and technical staff. The two aspects of teaching take place on the university site of the Timone health campus and the Timone hospital site. Research is very present with the integration of our teacher-researchers in laboratories accredited by AMU (ADES, ISM, LBA, MEPHI): the mutualisation of knowledge and the diversity of the thematic fields of these host structures participate in a growing dynamic of the research of our School.

About the Applied Biomechanics Laboratory

The LBA is a joint research unit of the Gustave Eiffel University/Aix Marseille Université, with 60-70 staff members. Located in the heart of the Faculty of Medicine, on the North University Hospital Campus, the uniqueness of the Applied Biomechanics Laboratory comes from its multidisciplinary and transversal approach between Engineering Sciences and Medicine.

In many fields such as health (with its surgical and biomedical applications) and transport safety, the "virtualization" of research and its applications is a major step in the technological revolutions to come. In this context, the LBA has chosen to invest in the implementation of Virtual Man, initially to understand the etiology of trauma, and today to improve the means of repairing these injuries as well as to improve the treatment of certain pathologies (surgical planning, medical devices, etc.).
Thus, the line of research which federates the activity of the Laboratory is centered on the Virtual Man to understand the traumatisms, to prevent them and repair them or to better look after the human body. It mobilizes multidisciplinary approaches between life sciences and engineering sciences with strong expertise in biomechanics, physiology, anatomy, imaging, mechanics and computer science.
This scientific strategy is broken down into two complementary research areas:

  • Biomechanics of trauma, which refers to the issues of understanding, prevention, management and repair of an injury
  • Biomechanics and therapeutics, which is useful for developing new medical devices, for planning, evaluating or training in surgical techniques.
