Thematic school - ECOCOMPLEX

Complex systems and global ecology: from fundamental to operational
EcoComplex" Thematic School 6-9 Oct. 2020 La Couronne, commune of Martigues (France)

Context

The "EcoComplex" thematic school is a laureate of the "Schools of Transition" section of the ITEM Institute's 2020 Call for Projects. This component finances innovative pedagogical actions for master or doctoral students, staff or professionals outside the institution in the framework of continuing education.

Summary

This thematic school "Ecocomplex" consists in putting in interactions various disciplinary fields to apprehend the complex systems, in particular physics which developed a whole of methods in very strong coupling with applied mathematics (statistical physics in equilibrium and out of equilibrium, dynamic systems, nonlinear physics, multi-scale approaches, numerical simulation...), but also the economic and social sciences, in particular geography, sociology and planning of the territories, geosciences, biology and of course ecology This school will contextualize all the teaching in an epistemological and philosophical framework. The main objective will be, in the end, to evaluate the feasibility of a framework or a common theoretical base, which can be shared, accessible and mobilized to respond to the major socio-environmental challenges of the 21st century.

From an operational point of view, the aim will be to illustrate and even "test" the effectiveness of theoretical and methodological concepts through two major socio-environmental challenges: the energy transition and the circular economy.
