Study program & study paths for the Physics of the Universe

It is recalled that a Master degree is a 2-year long cycle which aims at validating 120 ECTS through four semesters of 30 ECTS (credits) each. After completion of his/her a Master's degree in Physics, the student will graduate from Aix-Marseille University together with a Diploma Supplement labelled by the Institute of Physics of the Universe.

Incorporated within the Master of Physics in Fundamental Physics (FunPhys Master), the IPhU Graduate School proposes specific study tracks whose detailed programs and syllabus of each the courses can be found by browsing through the FunPhys Master program web page.

The Graduate School Master's program is divided into four tracks :

  • Stars, Galaxies & Cosmology
  • Relativistic Theoretical Physics
  • Particles & High Energy Universe
  • Instrument scientist (to be open in September 2021) for large instruments as particle accelerators, telescopes, satellites, ...

The master student must choose to follow one of these tracks throughout the Master program or can construct his/her own profile of studies in the Physics of the Universe field. Each track offers a coherent set of courses, among these, several are shared through different tracks.

The specialization starts from semester 2 of the 1st Master year (M1-year) and goes on during the 2nd Master year (M2-year) through various choices of core and optional units.


Courses' locations:
Depending on the choices of M2-courses, lectures might be given on various campus sites. For instance, M2 specializations in IPhU topics:

  • Astrophysics: St-Jerôme campus site and LAM (Chateau-Gombert)
  • Particle Physics & Astroparticles or Relativistic Theoretical Physics: Luminy campus site.

N.B. Location for the M1-year: main campus site is St-Charles (Semester 1 & 2). For practical labs & computer simulation, once per week, the campus site is St-Jerôme.
