Study day: Women, gender and digital: where is the problem? - 24 August 2021

For several decades, the observation has remained the same: there are few female computer scientists, whether in studies, training or IT professions. Where are the female computer scientists in Western countries? While the beginnings of the profession were marked by a relative parity, it is clear that its masculinization is evident, even worsening since the early 2000s. The situation is similar in higher education in IT. In parallel to what appears to be a shortage, it must also be noted that digital technologies themselves are "gendered", i.e. they embody, from their conception, gender biases (but also class, race, validism and ageism), the effects of which can be felt in practices but also in the various modes of transmission (training, digital education).

Proposals should include the title of the paper, the status and institution of the communicant, an email address, and an abstract outlining the issue and materials used (between 250 and 400 words). Proposals should be accompanied by a short bio-bibliographical note.
They should be sent before June 5, 2021.

Proposals for papers may (in particular) address one of the following themes:

  • contribute to the state of the art of the phenomenon by presenting new studies and data from different contexts, both Western and non-Western
  • to propose and/or renew hypotheses for thinking about this problem, by addressing issues related to masculinities (hegemonic, minority), issues related to LGBTQI identities;
  • propose and/or renew hypotheses to think about possible solutions: critique the notion of role model, demasculinization of training and education, transformation of hegemonic narratives of computing centered on power and self-engendering;
  • understanding why "gendered choices" in non-western contexts allow girls to enter the digital sector;
  • understanding what works and what doesn't in awareness campaigns
