Linking Research & Education at AMU

20 Institutes for Research and Education & 2 Graduate schools

Aware of the central societal role it plays in its territory, Aix-Marseille Université is constantly striving to modernize its practices, for the benefit of all. It is committed to interdisciplinarity and innovation by developing institutes for research en education that structure the Aix-Marseille site and reinforce the attractiveness and excellence of its research and training.

In line with the winning programs of national calls for projects - the institutes of Convergence Science 2017-2025 (Centuri, ILCB), the Schools of Research 2018-2027 (nEURo*AMU, AMSE) and the Institute for Advanced Study (Iméra), Aix-Marseille Université and its partners have been committed to the creation of interdisciplinary institutes from 2019 ongoing.

20 institutes between education and research, 20 clusters of excellence

The AMU institutes are the result of an interdisciplinary approach based on the university's laboratories, faculties and schools, as well as its socio-economic partners, to strengthen its attractiveness and the visibility of the Aix-Marseille site at the local, national and international levels.
These thematic institutes are new structuring objects that aim to enhance the themes of excellence of Aix-Marseille Université. They are unique in that they combine teaching and high-level research in an interdisciplinary perspective.

They bring together teams from one or more research units and master's and doctoral level courses run by one or more components, with the aim of establishing a strong link around a shared multidisciplinary theme, articulated between training and research. Based on the existing Masters programs and the doctoral schools of Aix Marseille Université, these institutes intend to develop a culture of interdisciplinary training with an international focus, both through and for research, based on the model of the Graduate Schools, and by involving socio-economic partners in the training offer developed.

These thematic institutes aim to respond to the challenges of creating new knowledge through interdisciplinarity, the emergence of talent, attracting the best researchers to the site, and raising funds.

Among the AMU institutes: 2 Institutes of Convergence Science (national winning programs 2017-2025)

The "Institutes of Convergence Science" action under the "Programme d'Investissements d'Avenir" (wave 1) is a pioneering program for linking research and training in an interdisciplinary approach. The Institutes of Convergence Science aim to structure multidisciplinary scientific sites to address major issues at the crossroads of societal and economic challenges.
Aix-Marseille Université is the winner of 2 Institutes of Convergence Science in 2016, Centuri and ILCB. They are respectively endowed with 21M€ and 8.8M€ co-financed by the Programme d'investissements d'Avenir and the A*Midex foundation, for a period of 10 years.

Capitalizing on the experience of the INFORM Laboratory of Excellence, the Centuri project (Turing Center for Living Systems) - coordinated by Professor Thomas Lecuit - is selected by the ANR and becomes an Institut of Convergence Science in 2017.
Centuri aims to structure innovative interdisciplinary research on the dynamics of living systems, bringing together the study of development, neuroscience and immunity. Centuri brings together 48 research groups on AMU's Luminy campus, in biology, physics, computer science and mathematics, as well as numerous platforms. Training is also at the heart of the institute's program, which has set up a Centuri Graduate School(Master's, PhD and post-doc programs, summer school).

CenTuri has obtained the label "AMU institute" in 2021.

2 Graduate schools (national winning programs "Schools of Research" 2018-2027)

The aim of the "Schools of Research" action under the "Programme d'Investissements d'Avenir" (wave 1) is to strengthen the impact and international attractiveness of a university site's research and training in one or more scientific fields. The aim is to finance the internationally recognized Graduate School model, which brings together master's and doctoral programs as well as one or more high-level research laboratories and research organizations.
Aix-Marseille University is the recipient of two Schools of Research in 2017, AMSE and nEURo*AMU, for a period of 10 years. They are endowed with €16.6M and €10M respectively, co-financed by the Programme d'Investissements d'Avenir and the A*Midex foundation.

Coordinated by Alain Venditti, this project brings together teaching and research around a new scientific project focused on public action in a world in crisis, particularly in the southern Mediterranean countries facing specific challenges and obstacles on the path to development.
AMSE proposes the creation of a Grande Ecole in Economics within Aix-Marseille Université by proposing an innovative training program at the master and doctoral levels, which aims to train a new generation of economists, researchers, professors and policy makers capable of meeting the challenges of a world in crisis.

Coordinated by Anne Kavounoudias, this project aims to structure AMU's strengths and potential in neuroscience, to simplify and professionalize the courses, and to increase its international visibility from the 3rd year of the bachelor's degree to the doctoral program in neuroscience.
