Official launch of the institute Societies in Transition in the Mediterranean - 6 March 2020

In the dynamics of innovation of Aix-Marseille University, the institute Societies in Mutation in the Mediterranean (SoMuM) officializes its creation through an event punctuated by conferences and workshops.

This institute is one of the 13 institutional institutes created by Aix-Marseille University in June 2019. As a bridge between training and research as well as an observatory of the complexity of sustainable transformations of societies in the Mediterranean at the interface of Europe, Africa and the Middle East, the Institute Societies in Mutation in the Mediterranean federates 10 disciplines in human and social sciences on the Aix-Marseille University site and aims to create new interdisciplinary and international training courses on Mediterranean studies.

An event in the presence of François Hartog - historian, director of studies at the EHESS - and Christian Grataloup - geohistorian, Professor Emeritus at the University Paris Diderot. Mediterranean House of Human Sciences (MMSH) - 5 rue du château de l'horloge, Aix-en-Provence.

This event will be structured around different highlights:

  • A presentation of the institute by Sylvie Mazzella, Scientific and Technical Manager, and her team;
  • A two-voice conference on the theme "Time and Space. La trame du présent et la Méditerranée dans la mondialisation" given by François Hartog - historian, director of studies at the EHESS - and Christian Grataloup - geohistorian, professor emeritus at Paris Diderot University.

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE SOCIETES EN MUTATION EN MEDITERRANEE (SOMUM) :
On the site of Aix-Marseille University, the Institute Societies in Mutation in the Mediterranean covers a vast disciplinary field in human and social sciences in support of an international network of scientists and socio-economic and cultural actors. Supported by the Mediterranean House of
Sciences de l'Homme (MMSH), the Institute Societies in Transition in the Mediterranean aims to describe, analyse and anticipate deep and lasting transformations in the Mediterranean at the interface of Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The production and processing of survey data and the collection of Big data, as well as their archiving and valorisation, are at the heart of the scientific and pedagogical approach. The Institute combines research and training from the Master's level onwards in an interdisciplinary and international perspective.
