CNRS Thematic School - Social sciences and high-risk terrains in Syria and the Middle East
May 26 to June 1, 2024
The aim of this thematic school is to provide multi-disciplinary training in the methodological, theoretical and ethical issues involved in high-risk fields in the social sciences. Starting from the case of Syria, with a view to extending our reflection to the Middle East (Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen), we aim to address the following four main themes:
- working with extreme violence: investigating and writing ;
- ethics of social science research ;
- archives in exile: collection, processing, storage and disclosure;
- narratives of others versus narratives of self.
The Balkans. Spaces, Societies, History - 3rd edition: Sensory Heritages & Sensitive Memories in the Balkans

Heritage and memory processes are usually analysed as discourses, practices and representations, entailing critical approaches of heritage policies, official versus alternative narratives, memory competition, contested heritages, politicization of culture and history. They are related to identity and alterity making, temporalities and spatialities, relations between power and knowledge, community and society building at different scales (local, national, transnational), symbolic appropriation or rejection of cultural legacies.

Rédoc's summer university takes the form of a "Knowledge and Social Commitments "* seminar on Sunday, July 7, as a prelude to the XXIInd International Congress of French-Speaking Sociologists "Sciences, Knowledge and Societies "**, from July 8 to 12, 2024. Doctoral students can take advantage of a seminar and then the week of the Congress.

* The question of social commitment raises major knowledge issues. Howard Becker shows that commitment refers to the need for coherent behavior (2006). This requirement, constitutive of the scientific approach, leads us to question commitment from the point of view of inquiry (axis 1). It also calls into question the intervention of sociologists in the environments studied (axis 2) and their ambition to change the city (axis 3).
** In the last decade, a number of scientific findings have been hotly debated in the public arena. This questioning of scientific knowledge is nothing new in historical terms, but it is taking on an unprecedented form, raising new epistemological, social, political and media issues. Recent examples include the questioning of the legitimacy of scientific knowledge on climate change and the use of vaccines to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.
