About CIVIS

The European Civic University CIVIS is supported by Aix-Marseille University alongside:

  • Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece),
  • the University of Bucharest (Romania),
  • the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium),
  • the Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain),
  • University of Rome la Sapienza (Italy),
  • Stockholm University (Sweden),
  • and Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen (Germany).

With the ambition of creating an integrated university space where students, teachers, lecturers, professors, researchers, and administrative staff move and cooperate as freely as in their home institutions, this alliance will bring together some 380,000 students and 55,000 staff.

We see our European Civic University as a space for innovative and responsible teaching, research, cultural exchanges and civic action. Through our commitment to meeting these essential challenges, we want to assert ourselves as a bridge from Europe to the South. The Mediterranean area and Africa will be at the heart of our global strategy.

Our project aims to promote European values, cultures and citizenship to new generations of students. It will promote innovative and integrated cooperation, regardless of borders, languages or academic disciplines. It will act both locally and globally, while challenging social, economic or environmental problems.

This strong commitment will contribute to the growth and multiplication of opportunities at all levels, for all partner universities and for Europe as a whole. Our European Civic University sees itself as an essential instrument in the renewal of the European integration process.

Our common objective will include a commitment to the territories and their socio-economic and cultural actors. We will combine our resources in the fields of education and research to meet the major challenges of today and tomorrow, such as urbanization, energy and climate change, ageing and cultural heritage. The major challenges will also be pedagogical, to offer the same opportunities in higher education to all students, or to develop new methods of digital learning.
