Self-training

Self-study - tutoring, conversation workshops, grammar, etc.

For more information on what self-study language learning is all about:

Self-study, or guided self-study, is a device that allows you to learn on your own. It requires you to customize your learning path to meet your specific needs. It allows for a great deal of freedom of choice (in terms of intermediate objectives, choice of resources and materials, and the different activities or workshops that the Center offers). You go at your own pace and have more control over your learning.

Examples of self-study resources: the foreign language press, the ASSIMIL method, the online resources of the MyCow website, in English and in French as a foreign language (FLE), the language learning platform 7Speaking, the REFLEX software (in English, German and Spanish), resources to work on certifications (CLES, TOEIC, TOEFL, DELE, DALF, TCF, etc.), bilingual or foreign language audio books and novels, etc.

- What does self-study involve on my part?

Self-study implies a certain investment on your part because you will be responsible for your course. You will have to take the initiative to determine your objectives, define the content, choose the appropriate resource, and even evaluate yourself. For this to work, you must be motivated and ready to organize your learning.

- Does self-study mean that I learn by myself?

No. However, self-study does not mean that you will learn alone. The CARLAM team and the language tutors will provide you with information and support throughout your course, and can help you define your objectives. To do this, you can make an appointment with a tutor by registering for one of the available slots on the CARLAM AMeTICE page.

Working sessions with a tutor (conversation, tutoring, pedagogical/linguistic/grammatical help, 7Speaking help) or in teletandem/linguistic and intercultural tandem will play a decisive role in the quality of your work and in your progress, and consequently in the BONUS grade (for students concerned by the BONUS device: "Deepening of knowledge" - self-training in languages).

- What is a conversation session?

A conversation session is a group meeting with a native speaker (or sometimes a student). Conversation sessions allow students to develop a certain number of skills such as continuous speaking, interaction, oral comprehension, oral expression, acquisition and reuse of vocabulary, grammar, phonetics, and the discovery of new cultural content.
Sessions take place in small groups of 5 to 8 people in face-to-face and/or distance learning.

- What is a tutoring session?

A tutoring session (or a tutoring appointment) is a 20 to 30 minute individual meeting with a language tutor, either face-to-face or remote. The role of a tutor is to :

  • advise you and show you how to make the most of the LRC's resources
  • answer your questions
  • help you improve your ability to learn independently and increase your confidence
  • accompany you in your learning on the 7Speaking platform, help you with grammar/language points and correct you.

- What is Teletandem/Tandem?

Teletandem is an exchange between two students of different mother tongues. The two languages are practiced in a spirit of mutual help and friendship under the supervision of a language tutor. Students enrolled in this program participate in exchanges with international students from other partner universities. The objective of the Teletandem/tandem is to develop language and intercultural skills as well as the student's autonomy.
