Nous avons le plaisir de vous annoncer l'ouverture de la nouvelle formation interdisciplinaire portée par l'Institut Origines. Cette formation est destinée à l'ensemble des étudiants en thèse inscrits dans les écoles doctorales AMU.

Les étudiants peuvent s'inscrire à la totalité de la formation (30H) ou une partie seulement (1 ou plusieurs modules parmi les neufs proposés) via leur compte ADUM.


Vous êtes doctorants et vous êtes intéressé par la thématique des "Origines de la vie" ? Alors n'hésitez pas à vous inscrire à la formation doctorale proposée par l'institut Origines.

L'institut Origines a le plaisir de proposer une formation doctorale sur le thème de "la formation des planètes aux conditions d'émergence de la vie" à tous les étudiants inscrits aux écoles doctorales d'AMU. Vous trouverez ci-joint les détails (description complète, lieux et dates des

interventions) dans le document joint. L'ensemble des modules viennent de s'ouvrir sur ADUM et le premier cours commence le 8 janvier 2024 !

Are you a doctoral student interested in the question of the "Origins of life"? If so, don't hesitate to sign up for the doctoral course offered by the Origins Institute.

The Institute is pleased to offer a doctoral course on the theme of "planet formation and the conditions for the emergence of life" to all students enrolled in AMU's doctoral schools. Details (full description, locations and dates) can be found in the attached document. All modules have just opened on ADUM, and the first course starts on January 8th!

The Institut Origines Members

 

General description of the formation : Institut Origines is an organization set up by Aix-Marseille University with the aim of establishing a center of excellence in both research and education, focusing on an interdisciplinary theme: astrobiology. These courses, offered as part of AMU's doctoral training program, are designed to give students an insight into the various aspects of this interdisciplinary science.

Description: The training is organized in eight modules of 2 to 5 hours (2x2.5h — including break) each. These modules are detailed below. The student has the possibility to select modules individually or in total.

 

Module 1 : Formation and evolution of planetary systems

Teacher : Olivier Mousis (olivier.mousis@lam.fr)

Location : LAM

Duration : 2.5 H

Date : January, 8th

Objectives : Understand the formation of planetary systems, telluric and giant planets, moons and small bodies.

Program : Introduction to the protoplanetary disk model, to their thermodynamic and chemical evolution, formation of the first solids, links between the composition of the solar system bodies and their formation conditions.

Module 2 : The primitive matter of the solar system

Teachers :  Pierre Vernazza (pierre.vernazza@lam.fr) and Jérôme Gattacceca (gattacceca@cerege.fr)

Location : LAM

Duration : 2x2.5 H

Date : February, 13th

Objectives : Give an overview of the material present in the early solar system and its evolution over the last 4.6 Gyrs.

Program : Review of the major ground-based surveys and recent space missions to small bodies, in particular the sample  return missions. Introduction to meteorites, their classification, observation, and flux to Earth.

Module 3 : Notions of habitability in the solar system

Duration : 2.5 H

Date :  March, 11th

Objectives : Draw up an inventory of the potential habitats of the solar system

Program : Notions of habitability and classification: Mars, and the icy moons of giant planets.

Module 4 : Physical processes in the emergence of life

Duration : 2x2.5 H

Date : April, 9th (9:30am- 3:30pm)

Objectives : Understand the role of planetary magnetospheres and of impact processes on the emergence, maintenance and/or destruction of life.

Program : Introduction to the magnetospheres of terrestrial and giant planets, impact on habitability. Understand the interaction between the Galilean moons and the magnetic field of Jupiter. Introduction to the formation of impact craters on Earth and other planets, their consequences, and impact products.

Module 5 : Metals as the hearth of life

Duration : 2.5 H

Date : April, 15th

Objectives : Discover the role of metals in the emergence of life on Earth and its evolution.

Program : Role of metals in prebiotic chemistry (catalysis of early abiotic reactions) and their importance in provinding free energy for the emergence of life.

Module 6 : Search for life outside the solar system: exoplanets

Objectives :  Learn about extrasolar planets, how to detect them, and the search for traces of life on theses planets.

Program :  

1. Introduction to historical and philosophical considerations to the quest of life in the Universe.

2. Technical methods to detect planets outside the solar system

3. Review of the major discoveries in the field of exoplanets

4. Expected conditions to host life and corresponding exoplanets

5. Future projects to search for life outside the solar system

6. The SETI programme

Module 7 : Diversity of current life forms on earth: from viruses to extremophiles

Date : May, 15th

Objectives : Become familiar with the most extreme forms of life on Earth and possible scenario for the emergence of cellular life on Earth and possibly on other Planets.

Program :    Presentation of extremophilic prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea), viruses, viroids, prions.

Module 8 : Origin of Life

Part 1. Formaion and evolution of organic matter (G. Danger)

Objectives : Define the possible links between the origin of the solar system and the formation and evolution of exogenous organic matter and its role in the emergence of living systems on Earth.

Program : Understand the origin of organic matter available within interplanetary objects and discuss under what conditions the organic content of interplanetary bodies could have played a role in the emergence of living systems on the primitive Earth.  

Part 2. From philosophical concepts to scientific hypotheses (JM. Claverie)

Objectives : Brainstorm the epistemological debates concerning the emergence of life on Earth, and its definition.

Program :  Definition of life (on Earth) from antiquity to the present day. Life as an « emergent » property. The cell as an elementary unit of life. The notion of an organism. Life as a continuous process through time. Boundaries of life. Concept of neo-Darwinian evolution.
