Apply to amU

-> Which program should I choose?

Depending on the terms of the international partnership between Aix Marseille Université and your home university, you may be able to study in one of Aix Marseille Université's faculties.

It is important to check the language and academic requirements of each faculty before applying.

-> Application procedure :

The application and admission procedure for an exchange program consists of several stages:

Before you can take part in an exchange program at Aix Marseille Université, you need to check with your home university that there is a cooperation agreement between your home university and amU.

You must then follow your university's application procedure.

If your home university accepts your application, you will be nominated by your home university's international relations coordinator to one of our international mobility managers at amU.

Once your home university has sent your nomination, you can proceed with your application.

Once your nomination has been validated by amU, a link will be sent to you by email to complete your online application (on the MOVEON platform). You will need to upload the required documents.

The documents required are :

  • A curriculum vitae in English or French
  • A cover letter in French or English
  • A copy of your identity card or passport
  • Language certificate
    • TCF/DELF/DALF French certificate - level B1: if you wish to take courses in French.
      Please note: level B2 is required for the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Political Science (FDSP).
    • An IELTS/TOEDL/TOEIC English certificate/teacher's certificate - level B2: if you wish to take courses in English.
      Please note: access to courses taught in English in the English department of the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences (ALLSH) is reserved for students majoring in English.
  • University transcripts in English or French
  • A letter of recommendation
  • Your study contract (the form will be sent to you upon completion of your application).

-> Exemption from tuition fees:

As part of an exchange program at Aix Marseille Université (amU), international students retain their administrative registration at their home university, where they pay the corresponding tuition fees for the duration of their exchange.

At the same time, they are registered at amU as exchange students, and as such benefit from an exemption from registration fees at our university.

Please note: this exemption does not apply to full-time courses offered by the Service Universitaire des Langues (SUL), with the exception of certain specific programs (ISEP or special agreements with partner universities).

CROUS housing

Housing solutions in CROUS university residences are available for international exchange students at amU. To apply for these housing options, you need to be aware of certain information and follow a number of steps.

-> How to apply :
  1. Once you have been accepted as an exchange student at amU, you will receive an email requesting additional information:
    • Whether or not you wish to pre-book a CROUS room, and your INE number if applicable;
    • Your emergency contacts;
    • Any special needs you may have;
  2. This information must be entered on the 2025/26 Incoming Mobility Portal.
  1. Create your MSE account (Mes Services Etudiants)
    Log on to the Mes Services Etudiants website and create your personal MSE account. You will then be given a National Student Identifier (INE). This number consists of 10 digits + 1 letter (or 9 digits + 2 letters).
  2. Enter your INE number on the Mobility Portal
    Log on to the Mobility Portal and complete your user profile with your INE number.
    Also answer the additional questions (emergency contacts and special needs).
  3. We also recommend that you inform your incoming mobility manager by e-mail of your wish to benefit from a room in a CROUS hall of residence.

Once you have received your INE number and informed us of your wish to reside at CROUS, your mobility manager will contact you by e-mail and inform you of the procedure to follow. This e-mail will be sent to you :

  1. End of June, for arrival in the first semester of the academic year.
  2. In December, for arrival in the second semester.
  1. CROUS will send you an e-mail with a room reservation proposal.
  2. As soon as you receive this e-mail, you have 120 hours (5 days) to accept this proposal.
  3. Acceptance of the room offer requires an online payment of €70 (from the start of the 2026/2027 academic year), as an advance on the rent. This payment is compulsory to validate the accommodation reservation. You can make the payment by credit card or ask a third party to do it for you by "transferring the payment".

Please note that you will not be able to choose your residence and room, and that allocations are made on a first-come, first-served basis. However, our teams will do their utmost to ensure that you are accommodated as close as possible to your campus!

As soon as you have confirmed your reservation for a CROUS room, create your rental file online on the Mes Services Étudiants website.
If you encounter any difficulties at this stage, contact MSE by writing to them via their online assistance form (form at the bottom of the page).

Here are the required supporting documents:

  • Third-party liability insurance certificate (damage caused to a third party)
  • Proof of home insurance (minimum coverage for fire, water damage, fire and theft) for the entire duration of your stay (from day of arrival to day of departure).
  • CROUS information form with handwritten signature
  • VISALE guarantor's certificate or physical guarantor's certificate or school guarantor's certificate signature
  • Tuition certificate or university acceptance letter
  • Valid proof of identity

Benefit from attractive rates on your insurance policies withADH or HEYME.

A few days before your arrival in France, contact the reception of your future residence by e-mail or telephone to inform the receptionist of your arrival arrangements. Let them know your date and time of arrival , and ask any questions you may have!

Once you've checked that your online rental file is complete, go directly to the reception desk of your CROUS hall of residence. The receptionist will give you the key to your room and will go through the inventory of fixtures with you.

Please note that if your online rental file is not complete, the receptionist will not be able to give you your key!

CROUS university residence reception desks: Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm. Closed at weekends.

-> Your commitments as a tenant :

Having a room at CROUS commits you to certain things:

  1. Stay in your university accommodation for the duration of your studies at Aix Marseille Université.
  2. Leaving your accommodation on the expiry date of your lease.

Please note that in the event of early departure, you will not be reimbursed (except in cases of force majeure).

Accommodation outside CROUS

If you don't want to live in a CROUS residence, it's up to you to look for accommodation on your own. Find out more about the administrative procedures involved!

-> Once you have found a home, please follow the steps below to finalize your installation:

Before you even start looking for accommodation, we advise you to start gathering all the administrative documents you'll be asked to provide. Even if your rental file is complete and solid, there's a good chance that landlords will ask you to provide proof of a guarantor.

Visit our Housing FAQ for details of the administrative documents you'll need to provide , and tips on how to find your guarantor easily!

Once you've found your accommodation and your application has been accepted, you'll need to sign a lease (or rental contract). This is a document that you and your landlord sign to define the conditions under which you have the right to occupy the property. Most of the time, the following information appears in this contract:

  • the amount of rent and charges
  • the amount of the security deposit
  • The notice period (in the event of early departure).

When you sign your lease, you'll be asked to pay the first month's rent + the security deposit. So make sure you have enough money to pay the equivalent of 2 months' rent in 1 instalment!

Before you move in, you need to carry out an inventory of fixtures with your landlord! This is the time when you check the general condition of the property and any malfunctions.
If there are any defects, even minor ones, report them to your landlord and have them noted on the document before you sign.
This is the same document that will be used as a reference when you carry out your exit inventory and check the conditions in which you will be returning the property!

When you go through the rooms and equipment in your home (walls, cupboards, mirrors, toilet flushes, hobs, etc.), pay particular attention to all the details!

Whatever type of home you choose to live in, you are legally obliged to take out a home insurance policy covering water damage, fire, theft and vandalism. This insurance covers both the walls of your home and the property inside.
Read our insurance FAQ to find out more!

Here are a few examples of insurance companies for students:

  • If you rent your own apartment in the private sector, you'll need to take out an electricity and/or gas contract.
  • If you're renting a room in a CROUS hall of residence or a private student residence, the price of electricity and gas is generally already included in the rent. So you don't need to take out a contract.

There are several energy suppliers in France, so don't hesitate to compare offers!

Students can benefit from Aide Personnalisée au Logement (APL) by applying directly on the Caisse des Allocations Familiales (CAF) website. The amount of assistance varies according to the type of accommodation, the rent, the student's status and income. Test your eligibility with our online simulation!

Please note that other complementary financial aid is also available. Consult our FAQ on social aid to find out more!

Integration activities

-> Semester 1: integration days

During the first semester, integration days are organized by the International Relations Office (DRI). Students are invited to take part in cultural, sporting and social activities.
The aim of these few days is to enable international students who have just arrived in France to discover the university's various departments and to familiarize themselves with the campuses and the area in which they will be working throughout their stay at amU.

-> Semester 2: social events

In the second semester, a social event is organized to enable new exchange students to meet each other, and those from the previous semester to get together!
