Faced with the profound transformations taking place in our societies, universities have a particular responsibility: to produce knowledge capable of enlightening public debate, of supporting decision-making and responding to the major challenges of our time. With this in mind, interdisciplinarity has been at the heart of our development strategy at Aix Marseille Université for several years now. Since the creation of the first interdisciplinary institutes in 2019, followed by the Mission Interdisciplinarité(s) in 2021, we have engaged in an ambitious collective dynamic. We have built a genuine institutional culture of interdisciplinarity, and transdisciplinarity in close collaboration with our partners.
I'm deeply convinced that interdisciplinarity lies at the heart of both breakthrough innovations and innovations in use.

A showcase for scientific expertise at local, national and international level
The interdisciplinary institutes are levers for regional development and for amU's national and international influence. Their mission is to federate and structure high-level scientific communities, with an inter- and trans-disciplinary approach to finding global solutions to complex problems. The 21 institutes bring together teams whose scientific excellence is internationally recognised, and they are also places where new inter-laboratory and inter-disciplinary collaborations can emerge. Thanks to their unifying and structuring role, they drive and support collective projects on a local, national and European scale.
A lever for transforming the training offer
An interdisciplinary approach is the key to a world where professions and expertise are constantly evolving. From bachelor's degrees to PhD level, the institutes support the training courses within amU's faculties and schools. They integrate research methodologies into training courses, initiate new institutional diplomas in conjunction with the university's faculties and schools, and enrich doctoral training as well as lifelong learning programmes. Opportunities for students and doctoral candidates are numerous: immersion internships in research units, field and summer schools, international mobility programs, thesis grants. To enhance lifelong learning, they also initiate new university certificates (CU) and post-graduate diplomas (DESU) offering training in interdisciplinary fields such as environmental transition, creativity and innovation, astrobiology.
A thematic entry point for our partners
For stakeholders in the socio-economic, cultural and institutional spheres, our interdisciplinary institutes facilitate access to a pool of expertise and resources, thanks to a structuring thematic approach. This makes the university's scientific strengths more visible to our partners, simplifies access to our many technological platforms, and opens up new opportunities for collaboration. Acting as effective university hubs, the interdisciplinary institutes connect stakeholders of all sectors around major scientific and societal challenges. Our partners can get involved in a wide range of initiatives: thematic events, innovation and R&D meetings, industrial chairs, co-funding of theses (notably via the CIFRE scheme), public-private research contracts, summer schools, continuing education, training-research partnerships, and access to technology platforms.

Aix-Marseille Initiative for Excellence
Aix Marseille Université's 21 interdisciplinary institutes are funded and coordinated by the Amidex university foundation, which supports the Aix-Marseille Initiative for Excellence.
The Amidex foundation is a consortium between Aix Marseille Université and 8 partners: CNRS, Inserm, CEA, IRD, Centrale Méditerranée, SciencesPo Aix, AP-HM and Institut Paoli-Calmettes.
