Examples of self-study resources: foreign-language newspapers and magazines, the ASSIMIL method, online resources from the MyCow website, in English and French as a foreign language (FLE), the AMUlangues GoFLUENT language learning platform, the REFLEX software (in English, German and Spanish), resources for preparing for language qualifications (CLES, TOEIC, TOEFL, DELE, DALF, TCF, etc.), audiobooks and bilingual or foreign-language novels, etc.
- What does self-study involve on my part?
Self-directed learning therefore requires a certain level of commitment on your part, as you will be responsible for your own learning journey. You will need to take the initiative to set your own goals, define the content, choose the appropriate resources, and even assess your own progress. For this to work, you need to be motivated and prepared to organise your own learning.
- Does self-directed learning mean I’ll be learning all on my own?
However, self-directed learning does not mean that you will be learning on your own. The CARLAM team and language tutors will provide you with information and support throughout your learning journey, and can help you set your goals. To do this, you can book an appointment with a tutor by signing up for one of the available slots listed on CARLAM’s AMeTICE (Moodle) page.
Sessions with a tutor (conversation, tutoring, academic/linguistic/grammatical support, goFLUENT support) or via teletandem/ linguistic and intercultural tandem sessions will play a decisive role in the quality of your work and your progress, and consequently in your BONUS mark (for students covered by the BONUS scheme: ‘Deepening of knowledge’ – self-directed language learning).
- What is a conversation session?
A conversation session is a group meeting with a native-speaking language tutor (or sometimes a student). Conversation sessions help to develop a number of skills, such as continuous speech, interaction, listening comprehension, speaking, vocabulary acquisition and reuse, grammar, pronunciation, and the discovery of new cultural content.
Sessions take place in small groups of 5 to 8 people, either in person and/or online.
- What is a tutoring session?
A tutoring session (or tutoring appointment) is a one-to-one meeting lasting 20 to 30 minutes with a language tutor, either in person or online. The tutor’s role is to:
- advise you and show you how to make the best use of the CRL’s resources
- answer your questions
- help you improve your ability to learn independently and build your confidence
- support you in your learning on the goFLUENT language platform, help you with grammar and language points, and correct your work.
- What is a Teletandem/Tandem?
Télétandem/Tandem is an exchange between two students with different mother tongues. Both languages are practised in a spirit of mutual support and camaraderie under the supervision of a language tutor. Students enrolled on this programme take part in exchanges with international students from other partner universities. The aim of the Teletandem/Tandem is to develop students’ language and intercultural skills, as well as their independence.
