CIVIS, at the heart of current social issues
Faced with the major challenges of our century and the rapid evolution of our societies and labor markets, higher education needs to adapt and offer solutions to society as a whole. CIVIS was born of this realization, and has consequently developed a structured approach articulating five major themes and challenges, which guide all its actions, activities and collaborations.
The following 5 themes are at the forefront of the Alliance's civic commitment, and we aim to become a vector of change and innovation in these areas:
- Health
- Cities, Spaces and Mobility
- Climate, Environment and Energy
- Digital and Technological Transformations
- Society, Culture and Heritage
By structuring its actions around these priority areas, CIVIS has given itself the means to remain relevant and useful to our societies. This approach enables us to anticipate and meet emerging challenges, by providing concrete and innovative responses, both locally and internationally.
To achieve these objectives, CIVIS combines training and research, and develops a culture of collaboration through innovative pedagogies that encourage critical thinking, adaptability, resilience and future-oriented skills.
Selected by CIVIS, these themes constitute genuine"spaces for academic collaboration" aimed at developing multinational, multidisciplinary teaching and research offerings. In particular, they enable :
- the creation of joint degrees
- innovative learning practices
- mixed mobility at Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate levels
- multidisciplinary research programs
- public and/or private partnerships
The Mediterranean and Africa at the heart of CIVIS' global strategy
For CIVIS, the future of Europe and that of Africa are intertwined.
CIVIS is the first European university to make it a point of honour to become increasingly involved with universities in the region, and thus a reference university for European relations with the Mediterranean and African regions in terms of research, teaching and innovation.
CIVIS and amU
As a civic and European university alliance, CIVIS makes it a priority to address the major societal challenges facing the 21st century. CIVIS structures its teaching activities around these challenges, in relation with research and innovation, and accompanies them with civic engagement actions and partnerships with Mediterranean and African interlocutors.
-> CIVIS, the European university
CIVIS recognizes the importance of the principles of the Bologna process for increasing mobility between its 11 members and other partner universities, and ultimately creating a European higher education area.
To this end, the alliance plans to create a CIVIS identity card (for students, but also for researchers and staff), full recognition of credits earned within the alliance, diploma supplements, measures to support the social dimension of mobility, quality assessment processes, etc.).
According to its mission statement, it envisages "the European Civic University as a space for innovative and responsible teaching, research, cultural exchange and civic action within Europe from the Baltic to the Mediterranean, while engaging with the world, its people and its institutions".
-> A myriad of opportunities and benefits
All amU students, whatever their discipline, can apply for an Erasmus+ exchange within the CIVIS alliance and are eligible for an Erasmus+ grant. In addition, they have access to a range of courses developed on all the campuses of the alliance's member universities: intensive programs, seminars, semester-long courses, etc.
Discover the full range of courses on the CIVIS website.
-> CIVIS therefore offers a range of opportunities open to all students from alliance member universities:
- Building a network within the CIVIS community : as an amU student, you are part of the CIVIS community of half a million students, 70,000 staff (including over 37,400 teachers and researchers), all spread across 11 major European cities. Thanks to the commitment of the CIVIS Alliance, you can also build strong links with a multitude of players in civil society, research, the public and private sectors, and thus increase your chances in your future job search.
- Access to international programs focused on the major societal challenges of our century. These programs are free, recognized at European level and available in 8 different languages. As part of these programs, you can take part in a mobility program that can be supported by an Erasmus + grant.
- Acquire new skills: critical thinking, entrepreneurship, problem-solving, creativity...
-> Get involved!
CIVIS won't be built in a day, and we need your help to transform higher education in Europe and shape the university of tomorrow.
Share your innovative ideas through social events such as CIVIS days and Open Labs activities.
If you are interested, please contact the CIVIS team.
-> CIVIS ambassadors at amU :
Student ambassadors are the first point of contact to represent the alliance and show what it has to offer. They are ready to respond to enquiries from the student community about opportunities offered by CIVIS, whether at university events (fairs, Mois de l'International, JPO, etc.) or as part of an individual, personalized exchange.
The network of ambassadors encourages participation in alliance activities and inspires new local initiatives.
Their missions are to
- represent the CIVIS Alliance at their home universities
- promote international mobility and cooperation between Aix Marseille Université and other CIVIS members
- exchange information with other students on opportunities offered by CIVIS member and partner universities
- promote the school
- take part in CIVIS activities, promote the alliance's opportunities outside of mobility

CIVIS and civil society
What is an Open Lab?
Anchored at the heart of its territory, an Open Lab is a place where local players can jointly explore and develop solutions to local and regional challenges.
Conceived as open, collaborative spaces, CIVIS Open Labs' mission is to create a meeting place where university and society exchange and co-construct projects from a multidisciplinary approach, and develop innovative, inclusive initiatives for high-impact solutions.
>> 11 universities, 11 cities, 11 Open Labs in Europe and 6 African partners <<
CIVIS Open Labs are distinguished by the fact that they are university-based Open Labs, and as such, supported by both CIVIS management and the host university.
In a way, they are incubators for citizen projects within our universities, enabling us to draw on the knowledge and expertise of our teachers and researchers, as well as enabling our students to open up to the region. It's also an opportunity to recognize the different ways in which knowledge can be created, and to value the empirical knowledge of our partners in civil society. The CIVIS Alliance Open Labs foster participatory, inclusive and impactful collaboration and promote innovation and co-creation at local, regional and international levels.
After a1st experiment from 2020 to 2022 during which we ran exclusively local projects, we are now running transnational projects.
The CIVIS Open Labs aim to federate a committed and inclusive community, providing a unique global entry point for students, stakeholders and academics. True to the principle of thinking globally, acting locally, they are at the interface between territories and international issues.
As such, Open Labs encourage innovation, strengthen collaboration between academic and non-academic players, and stimulate civic engagement in the service of societies.
Their main objectives are to
- Promote service-learningactivities : encourage students and researchers to engage with communities through experiential learning that responds to real-world challenges.
- Support participatory and citizen-based research: actively involve citizens and stakeholders in the research process to co-create knowledge and develop solutions.
- Advance design thinkingmethodologies : facilitate innovative problem-solving by integrating diverse perspectives and interdisciplinary approaches.
As part of the CIVIS Open Labs program, a range of activities are carried out in the territories, but also at European level, in collaboration with our African partners.
Various themes are addressed, such as health, ageing and well-being, youth and education, migration, inclusion and cultural diversity, heritage and civic identity, or sustainability, climate and the environment.
Conferences and workshops are also organized to disseminate best practices.

CIVIS and research
Thanks to the RIS4CIVIS project [Horizon Europe/SwafS, 2021-2023], the Research and Innovation dimension of the CIVIS Alliance has been added to the Training component already in place. The implementation ofstructuring actions to develop networking between researchers, promote a better understanding of the research and innovation potential of our partners, and support the submission of joint projects (notably within the framework of Horizon Europe) has strengthened exchanges and collaborations between our research teams at Alliance level.
At the end of the RIS4CIVIS project, the Research and Innovation component was fully integrated into the work of the CIVIS Alliance, with the creation of two new bodies: a Research Council (made up of the Alliance's Research Vice-Presidents), a strategic and consultative body, and a Research Unit (made up of representatives of the member universities' research departments and Europe units), which is more operational.
A Research & Innovation roadmap was defined in September 2024 for the entire Alliance, identifying 5 strategic areas of collaboration:
- Sharing and facilitating access to research infrastructures
- Support for young researchers
- Exchange of best practices in research support
- Participatory research
- Networking and scientific collaboration within CIVIS
Through the implementation of a structuring framework that will generate new synergies within the Alliance, this strengthening of exchanges is illustrated in concrete terms by:
- Increased and strengthened collaboration with Alliance partners,
- Exchanges of expertise and best practices in areas identified as priorities by the Alliance,
- Pooling of research resources and infrastructures,
- Facilitated mobility of researchers within partner establishments,
- Greater visibility for research on a European scale,
- easier access to European funding.
- The launch of an annual seed-funding call to support the development of scientific collaborations, particularly between European and African partners,
- The signing of an agreement in principle to facilitate access to research infrastructures within CIVIS,
- The development of online platforms listing all the thematic research groups and research infrastructures accessible within the Alliance,
- Implementation of a CIVIS-wide post-doctoral attraction, mobility and training program(CIVIS3i),
- Implementation of a program to support and accompany citizen science initiatives at Alliance level(ScienceUs),
- Contributing to the international work on research evaluation reform carried out by the CoARA coalition,
- Identification and joint submission of European collaborative projects,
- Organization of thematic staff weeks (participatory research, European collaborative projects, etc.) open to all partners.
