Presentation universite

With 78,000 students, including 10,000 international students and nearly 1,000 national and university degrees, a vocational guidance and integration service, a continuing education service, with 120 research structures linked to the largest research organisations (Inserm, CNRS, IRD, INRA, CEA,...) and its 12 doctoral schools, Aix-Marseille University is a considerable asset in the service of territorial economic development and beyond. It makes collaboration with socio-economic actors a major challenge. The A*Midex University Foundation, which supports the Idex, contributes to the development of a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary centre of world-class higher education and research. Many successes within the PIA framework attest to the dynamism of its research teams. Interdisciplinarity and innovation are strong markers of its identity, both in terms of research and innovation. Since its creation, Aix-Marseille University has been open to its environment and its time, and has implemented a bold policy of social responsibility, making it the leading French university in this field. Ambitious on the international level with targeted partnership axes, Aix-Marseille University is currently building a European university "CIVIS, a European Civic University" with 7 European partners. Based on the shared civic identities of its members, CIVIS brings together nearly 400,000 students and 55,000 staff around themes that bring societal challenges, such as sustainable development objectives, and focuses on the Mediterranean and Africa.

1. presentation

Created on 1 January 2012, Aix-Marseille University (AMU) can legitimately consider, at the end of a first period 2012-2017 largely devoted to the structuring of the single university, that it has met the major challenge it had set itself: to successfully merge the three universities of the territory and create a major world-class university.

AMU is thus an intensive research university, which has forged partnerships throughout the world, has affirmed its roots and territorial integration and is among the top French universities in the Shanghai ranking. AMU is a multidisciplinary university structured around five disciplinary sectors divided into 18 components (faculties, schools, institutes) and one multidisciplinary sector (including ESPE and IUT):

  • Arts, Literature, Languages and Humanities
  • Law and Political Science
  • Economics and Management
  • Health
  • Science and Technology

It is present in four departments and 10 cities. It has a real estate portfolio spread over 58 sites representing more than 830,000 m². AMU was the winner of the Campus Operation, which, in conjunction with the CPER (State-Region Plan Contract), enables it to rehabilitate and modernize its campuses in order to achieve the highest international standards. AMU is now a recognized and identified interlocutor, which has been able to impose its identity, assert itself as a key player in its territory, in whose development and influence it actively participates.

As of 2012, AMU has developed and structured a streamlined and readable training offer. This work was further developed as part of the master plan for training provision that it developed in 2016 and 2017, the result of internal consultation but also exchanges with socio-economic partners and local authorities. In terms of research and innovation, AMU has developed a site-wide strategy co-constructed in collaboration with the main research organizations (CNRS, Inserm, IRD, CEA...) and structured around its many research units and federations and its five intersectoral and interdisciplinary research centres (PR2I):

  • Energy
  • Environment
  • Humanities
  • Health & Life Sciences
  • Advanced Science & Technology

The excellence of the site's research has been recognized in particular by the success of several national (labex, equipex, Institutes convergences, RHU, EUR...) or European H2020 projects (AMU is thus the third French institution to collect funds under this programme). The accreditation of the A*Midex project, led by Aix-Marseille Université and its partners (AMU, CNRS, Inserm, IRD, CEA, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Marseille, Institut d'Etudes Politiques d'Aix-en-Provence and Ecole Central de Marseille), has also had a tremendous structuring and stimulating effect on the institution. It has made it possible to create a real dynamic around the five priority themes and strategic objectives identified in 2012:

  • Excellence in training and research
  • Partnerships with the socio-economic world
  • Internationalization of the site's areas of excellence
  • Ambitious human resources policy
  • Attractiveness of the site

A*Midex thus functions as an accelerator, through calls for projects or proactive actions, so that Aix-Marseille University and its partners can quickly achieve their ambitions. The sustainability of A*Midex in 2016 reflects both the recognition of the work accomplished by AMU and the opportunity to have a formidable tool to support the university's strategy.

At the end of a period that has seen the energies of our entire university community mobilized to build a new institution, it is on the strength of this collective dynamic that AMU is now projecting itself into its future by carrying out an ambitious and unifying project for the period 2018-2022. Thus, while the first five-year contract 2012-2017 was naturally intended to set up and structure the merged university. The 2018-2022 contract will be placed under the triple seal of innovation for all the university's fields of activity, the strengthening of the training-research link and the quality approach as the guiding principles for achieving excellence, particularly with the support of A*Midex.
