"Call for expression of interest" for the organization of season or summer school
November 15th, 2022

IMI is launching a "Call for Expressions of Interest" for the organization of season schools. The institute's objective is to finance one school per year (with a grant of about 20,000 €) and to renew the scheme for at least 3 years. The event must be oriented towards a student public (doctoral level and - at least partially - master's level) and will be open to students from the site and outside. The call is open to all themes of the institute. The organization of the school is free (period of the year, location, duration ...). The school must participate in the influence of the site.
We suggest that you send us by e-mail a preliminary description of the event you propose: scientific context, target audience, planned dates, duration ... even if it is a medium-term project (1 to 5 years). At this stage, this is not a selection process but a collection of projects to study whether it is appropriate to launch a more formal call.

Please send us your answers by December 12 at the latest.

IMI is financing four shifts in 2022-2023 as part of the CISAM+ project led by Aix-Marseille University and the A*Midex foundation to support the teaching of tutored projects inspired by societal and innovation issues.

In semester 1, two 64-hour shifts are open for recruitment for doctoral students and/or postdoctoral fellows from IMI laboratories.

The shifts will take place within the framework of the TAIME (Polytech) training-research-innovation tutored projects for 40 M2 level students. Each project (binomial or trinomial) is linked to a company and takes place in Polytech's Exploratorium educational space.
Examples of projects from the year N-1: Project for an autonomous connected greenhouse, Project for the thermal characterization of concrete (with St Gobain), Project for holding an electronic component in a vacuum (with Thales), Project for a thermal comfort bubble (EDF)...

In addition to the supervision of the tutored projects and the training of the students in the use of the various machines, the two temporary employees will participate in the maintenance of the space, the management of the equipment and the development and maintenance of the experimental background of the space (small manufacturing equipment, electronic equipment and sensors, laser cutting machine and 3D printer).

In the different examples mentioned above and particularly relevant for the understanding of the transition to turbulence in geophysical layered flows, the appearance of instabilities is due to the resonance of internal waves propagating in the sheared fluid [2,3,4]. For the Poiseuille flow, it is the Tollmien-Schlichting waves interacting with the gravity waves that give rise to the instability. For the strato-rotational instability, it is an interaction of gravito-inertial waves trapped at the walls while the baroclinic instability is interpreted as the resonance of Rossby waves propagating on vertically separated layers (...)

Particle clustering is a key parameter to model aggregation in turbulent flows. For heavy spherical particles, it has been shown that this phenomenon is mainly due to centrifugal forces which expel particles form high vortical regions. For thin flexible particles, the situation seems more complex. Their deformability allow the particle to wrap around the vortex core to follow the streamline. This shape is related to a difference of pressure from each side of the particles, the pressure being higher farther from the vortex core. This pressure difference is responsible of a net force that push the particle toward the vortex core. The balance of this net force and the centrifugal force might be at the origin of a new equilibrium distance from the vortex core (...)

Elastic sheets with mesoscale architecture obtained by folding or cutting have recently drawn considerable interest in the mechanics and engineering community. The cuts and features can be tailored to allow the sheets to morph into complex three dimensional shapes with unusual mechanical characteristics such as auxeticity, deployability and programmable non-linear properties. The main objective of the project is twofold: to identify and build a fundamental understanding of the mechanical response of hyperelastic membranes with architected cut patterns on the one hand and to transfer the resulting tunable mechanisms to prototypes for more reliable compliant medical devices on the other hand (…)

From a theoretical point of view, the characterization of these media is confronted firstly to the huge variety of particle size and shape that compose them, and secondly to the coupling between the macroscopic and microscopic scales: the flow is controlled by the spatial distribution of the particles (i.e., the microstructure of the suspension), but the macroscopic flow back-acts and modifies this microstructure. From an experimental point of view, it is crucial to develop tools to investigate the microstructure of concentrated suspensions. The use of optical methods is limited to diluted suspensions or transparent concentrated suspensions (by using an iso-index technique) that are not
representative of natural or industrial conditions (…)

The purpose of this project is to initiate new research to understand the abnormal persistence of dense evaporative sprays which are, in nature and artifacts, the rule rather than the exception. The question of the air lifetime of aerosol droplets following, for example, exhalation is not obvious. These droplets are usually formed in a swarm, with widely distributed sizes and close spacing so that the academic image of the single droplet evaporating on its own in a dry environment is an inadequate paradigm. These sprays can be impressive, more persistent than expected, a fact that applies to disease transmission but which prevails beyond the context of coughing or sneezing, or the transport of pollutants by agricultural spraying. We explain why new research, guided by old but seemingly forgotten discoveries, is needed to make progress on this issue.

The shape of an interface between two immiscible fluids makes it possible to characterize the physico-chemical properties of the interface in a non-intrusive way. These properties are key elements for understanding mass transfer phenomena and biochemical reactions at interfaces. In this project, we propose to study the interfacial properties of a biologically active fluid in the presence of mass transfer and/or stimulated by chemical reactions. We will consider a drop of liquid placed between two horizontal plates in a configuration similar to a Hele-Shaw cell [20]. This experimental device has two main advantages: it allows to finely control the mass transfer (diffusive regime) and to evaluate the interfacial properties in a quasi-static regime. The Hele-Shaw cell makes it possible to separate the effects of heat and mass transfer from the mechanics of the liquid bridge. In this configuration, the interface properties, modified by the biological suspensions contained in the fluid, will be measured simultaneously by an optical technique and a mechanical technique using a precision weight scale. We will measure the shape and position of the interface and the forces of the liquid bridge, which will give us access to the evolution of mass transfers by evaporation and the modifications of surface energies induced by biochemical reactions.

Le Présage is a restaurant that will be built in 2021 within the Château-Gombert Technopole in Marseille. This restaurant will combine a Scheffler reflector with solar concentration and a low-energy building to provide a pleasant place to eat high-quality, carbon-free food. A collaboration with the IUSTI laboratory has started in order to work experimentally (thanks to a prototype) and digitally on optics, improvement of heat transfer and thermal energy storage.

Hydrothermal liquefaction is a subcritical water condition process that can convert wet biomass into an oil phase rich in hydrophobic compounds (bio-oil), an aqueous phase rich in soluble compounds and a solid residual phase rich in minerals. A large number of international studies have investigated the production of bio-oil by hydrothermal liquefaction of the residual biomass to provide an alternative energy carrier to conventional fossil fuels. However, very few studies have focused on the recovery of mineral fractions (e.g. phosphorus, metals), and the mechanisms of interaction between mineral and organic compounds during hydrothermal liquefaction are still unclear. This project aims to understand the behaviour of mineral compounds and to describe their distribution among the different phases resulting from the hydrothermal liquefaction of residual biomass, with a particular focus on phosphorus (P). The digestate resulting from the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge will be used as an organic feedstock. The effect of various parameters, including pressure, temperature, reaction time and reagent addition (CaO), on the conversion pathways and mineral compositions of the effluent phases will be investigated through comparative hydrothermal liquefaction experiments at the laboratory scale. Extraction and selective purification experiments will be conducted to determine the major mineral phases and to assess the availability of P and metals in the solid HLW tailings. Knowledge and understanding of the behaviour of mineral compounds under subcritical water conditions is essential to optimize the hydrothermal process and improve the efficiency of recovery of mineral compounds from the residual phases, according to the concept of "no solid waste generation".

The study of extreme waves is a difficult problem for safety reasons and as an open problem in non-linear physics. In fact, due to global warming, there is an increase in the occurrence of extreme sea waves and extreme wave impacts with destructive effects. In coastal areas, extreme sea waves present a real danger to the population and affect human activities (industry, tourism, maritime transport, fishing, etc.) causing deaths and injuries and significant damage to vessels. From a physical point of view, there is no consensus on the known mechanisms for generating rogue waves. Furthermore, to date, there are no studies within the framework of totally non-linear governance equations that have examined the dynamics of extreme ocean waves in the presence of vertically sheared currents in water of arbitrary depth. The objective of this work is to address this problem through mathematical modelling, numerical simulations and experimental studies.

Monitoring and surveillance of children's skeletal growth is essential for the early diagnosis and therapeutic follow-up of paediatric bone pathologies. Today, it is a priority to better understand the biomechanical behaviour of children's bones in order to develop a dedicated diagnostic device associated with new therapeutic perspectives. Relevant research topics are thus proposed: the evaluation of the mechanical characterization of the quality of children's bones, the development of a high-resolution parametric ultrasound modality and the use of ultrasound stimulation as a therapeutic treatment.
