The Laboratoires d'excellence action (LABEX) relating to the Investments for the Future programme (« Programme des Investissements d'Avenir ») to provide significant resources to research units with international visibility, to enable them to compete on an equal footing with their foreign counterparts, to attract internationally renowned researchers and teacher-researchers and to build an integrated policy for high-level research and development.
The ambition of LABEX is:
- to increase scientific excellence and originality, the transfer of knowledge produced and the international visibility of Aix-Marseille Université;
- to guarantee the excellence of the courses and to play a leading role in master's and doctoral level courses;
- to strengthen the dynamics of the site.

- AMSE (Aix-Marseille School of Economics)
Coordinated by Professor Alain Venditti, this project is at the initiative of the creation of the AMSE School of Economics, within the Faculty of Economics and Management of Aix-Marseille Université, to reconcile the advantages of a university environment of scientific excellence and those of a grandes ecole with the desire to federate the economists of Aix-Marseille and to open up ever more to the international community.
In January 2018, Labex AMSE was integrated into the Ecole Universitaire de Recherche AMSE (EUR AMSE).
Coordinated by Professor François Hamel, this project develops the synergy of research in mathematics, computer science and at the interface of these two disciplines. The Labex includes 3 RMUs (CPT, I2M, LIS) and an international conference centre (CIRM), bringing together more than 600 researchers.
Coordinated by Professor Philippe Blache, this project brings together multidisciplinary skills in linguistics, computer science, psychology, neuroscience and medicine covering all the skills required to study language processing and its brain bases. The objective is to develop a generic and integrated language model that can be digitally simulated. The project involves six laboratories and is based on a set of experimental platforms.
In January 2017, the BLRI lab allowed us to obtain the Institut Convergences ILCB.
- INFORM (Information flow and membrane organization)
Coordinated by Professor Thomas Lecuit, this project is an interdisciplinary and international research consortium in quantitative biology that provides its own doctoral program, with competitive education.
In January 2017, Labex INFORM made it possible to obtain the Institut Convergences CENTURI.
- LABEX MED (Social Sciences and Humanities at the Heart of Multidisciplinarity for the Study of the Mediterranean)
Coordinated by Professor Brigitte Marin, this project includes 16 mixed research units of Aix-Marseille in human and social sciences, including 10 laboratories belonging to the MMSH (Maison de la Méditerranéenne des Sciences de l'Homme). Its objective is to develop and enhance interdisciplinary research projects around Mediterranean studies, to promote the education of young researchers and their mobility in the Mediterranean basin, and to develop Euro-Mediterranean partnerships.
- MEC ( Mechanics and Complexity)
Coordinated by Professor Alain Pocheau, this project concerns the study of the phenomena of movement, deformation of sources and transfers in Mechanical Sciences. The systems involved include solids, fluids, waves or energy sources, from micrometric scales (blood cells) to astronomical scales (planetary formations).
- OCEVU ( Origins, Constituents and Evolution of the Universe)
Coordinated by the Professor Eric Kajfasz, the Labex OCEVU is focused on environmental issues. A federative project aimed at exploring the major issues of contemporary physics on the history of the Universe, its origins and its components: origin of cosmic rays of very high energy, nature of dark energy and dark matter, formation of the first stars and galaxies, research into new theories in particle physics and cosmology.
- OTMED (Earth Objective: Mediterranean Basin)
Led by Professor Joel Guiot, this interdisciplinary project with a demanding international level, focusing on the environment in the Mediterranean basin and the semi-arid regions of the south. Labex wants to establish a link between the physico-biological sciences of natural hazards, particularly those related to climate change, and the social sciences.
- SERENADE (Towards a design of innovative, sustainable and safe nanomaterials)
Led by Professor Jérôme Rose, this project has two components (research and education) around the theme of nanomaterials. The project develops products containing nanomaterials or nanostructured materials that take better account of risks (exposure and hazard) throughout the life cycle, as well as innovative end-of-life processes: recycling, effluent and surface water treatment.
- ICOME2 (Interdisciplinary Centre on Multiscale Materials for Energy and Environment)
Coordinated by Professor Roland Pellenq, this project focuses on studying the properties of materials used in the development of new batteries or fuel cells, understanding the aging of concrete, the fracturing of geological materials for mineral resource extraction or waste storage, and metal fatigue. The Labex ICOME2 aims to establish links in education and research between the International Joint Unit MSM (UMI CNRS-MIT), the CINaM (CNRs-Aix-Marseille University) and the synchrotron SOLEIL by working on materials.
