Exceptional IMI seminar on Friday February 3rd 2023, at 11am (IUSTI amphitheater) 

Professor Lohse has been awarded in 2020 Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Aix-Marseille for his contributions in fluid mechanics.

Title : Physicochemical hydrodynamics of droplets in inkjet printing

Abstract: Inkjet printing is the most widespread technological application of microfluidics. It is characterized by its high drop productivity, small volumes and extreme reproducibility. In this talk I will give a synopsis of the fluid dynamics of inkjet printing and discusses the main challenges for present and future research [1]. These lie both on the printhead side - namely the detailed flow inside the printhead, entrained bubbles, the meniscus dynamics, wetting phenomena at the nozzle plate, and jet formation - and on the receiving substrate side - namely droplet impact, merging, wetting of the substrate, droplet evaporation, and drying. In most cases the droplets are multicomponent, displaying rich physicochemical hydrodynamic phenomena [2]. The challenges on the printhead side and on the receiving substrate side are interwoven, as optimizing the process and the materials with respect to either the printhead side or the substrate side is not enough: As the same ink (or other jetted liquid) is used and as droplet frequency and size matter on both sides, the process must be optimized as a whole. One example for conflicting requirements from the printhead side on the one hand and from the receiving substrate or more specifically the paper side on the other hand is the volatility of the ink: At the nozzle, it would be preferable if the evaporation of ink were avoided to prevent nozzle clogging, but on the paper side, fast evaporation of ink is desirable to enable productive printing and to prevent paper deformation.

Even such a seemingly simple process as the evaporation of multicomponent droplets keeps surprising us through its richness of phenomena. I will show and explain several of such phenomena, namely evaporation-triggered segregation thanks to either weak solutal Marangoni flow or thanks to gravitational effects. The dominance of the latter implies that sessile droplets and pending droplets show very different evaporation behavior, even for Bond number << 1. I will also explain the full phase diagram in the Marangoni number vs Rayleigh number phase space, and show where Rayleigh convections rolls prevail, where Marangoni convection rolls prevail, and where they compete, and why these processes are very important in piezoacoustic inkjet printing. I will also extend these considerations to ternary and colloidal droplets and show and explain the new, fascinating, and often counter-intuitive phenomena which occur for these case of complex ink droplets.

We are delighted to invite you to the International Symposium on Environmental Biotechnology and Engineering (7ISEBE) that will be held from May 22 to 26 in Marseille, France at World Trade Center, with local organizing by a consortium or research units including M2P2, member of IMI that also sponsor the event.

7ISEBE is part of a series of congresses created in 2004 at the initiative of a group of Mexican researchers with the aim of :
- making known and sharing the latest advances in research in Biotechnology and Engineering in the field of environmental protection and the development of renewable energies
- promoting the exchange of knowledge between researchers of all nationalities, a key step in the process of developing technological solutions that can be implemented on a global scale.
Since 2014, this series of congresses has been organized under the auspices of the ABIAER association created by the same researchers and whose objectives overlap with those of the congress.

The call for abstracts has been extended until January 31, 2023. Abstracts are welcome on all aspects of Environmental Biotechnology and Environmental Engineering disciplines, particularly on the following points :

3. Emerging pollutants
4. Biorefinery & Renewable energy production
5. Societal Challenges

"Pedagogical projects" - Morning of exchanges on Thursday, September 1st 2022 (from 10am)

Event open to all interested people.

We invite all interested people to meet on Thursday morning (01/09), at 10am on the IUSTI parking lot in front of the "technological hall" for a time of exchange around the different experimental educational platforms of the site.

Geoffroy Guéna (IUSTI) will then present the hall and will also talk about some of the projects carried out by the students in this place. Then, Maxime Chinaud (IUSTI) and Aurélien Maurel-Pantel (LMA) will talk about the progress of the application of the mechanics department of the UFR Sciences to the TRIPS (Teaching and Research Interdisciplinary platforms) call for projects, launched by A*MIDEX (letter of intent and next deadlines), then Joël Marthelot (IUSTI) will talk about the CISAM+ project.
All of these facilities and projects are opportunities to develop project-based teaching for all of IMI's training programs. Our meeting will therefore end with a time of exchange with all the participants, where different subjects can be discussed, such as, for example, the possible mutualization of equipment, the possible redundancies, the expectations of TIGER with regard to the experimental platforms and in particular the implementation of specific UE, etc...

Topic: Following our fundamental studies on the precession of the earth, we have patented a new type of bioreactor that mixes strongly while minimizing the shear rate. We are currently adapting these bioreactors for microalgae and stem cell growth at the start-up Planktovie.

This project concerns the characterization of the cooling of a partially melted nuclear power plant core in an accident situation. More precisely, our project aims at answering the question: what is the efficiency of the devices aiming at cooling and maintaining the corium and the debris in the reactor vessel (IVR approach for "In-Vessel Retention")? More fundamentally, our objective is to study the convective movements in a surface metal layer, radiatively heated by its lower surface, and cooled on its lateral surface and to a lesser extent, on its upper surface by radiation. Such a configuration has been the subject of very few academic studies and the evaluations currently performed in industrial codes are based on the use of correlations obtained in configurations where the metal layer is sufficiently thick and the cooling by its upper surface sufficiently efficient to be able to treat in a decoupled way the heat transfers to the top and those to the vessel wall. However, the most critical situations are obtained for metal layer thicknesses lower than those evaluated in steady state, which leads to question the validity of the correlations used to calculate the heat exchanges in this layer.

This project is the subject of a thesis currently underway at IRPHE and jointly financed by Areva, EDF and IRSN.

The training will take place in two parts:

- the industrial context, the technical issues and the tools used within IRSN to study this type of accidental event will be presented.

- A few theoretical elements on thermal convection will be recalled before presenting how the industrial problem leads to a new academic problem that is still little explored. We will discuss the implementation of two complementary models, one numerical and the other experimental.

This training will allow to credit 3H of doctoral training to the registered students.

Massilia Solar Cooking Contest 21 - #MSCC21 (Saturday, September 25 from 9am to 3pm)

Polytech Marseille, the Restaurant Le Présage and Les festins Photoniques are co-organizing the 1st Solar Cooking Contest, in partnership with the IUSTI Laboratory and the IMI Institute.

The contest is open to all amateur or professional cooks who share our values and wish to promote this beautiful project. Everyone can bring his or her own solar cooker or use one of those made available by the contest organizers to make the dish of his or her choice based on fruits or vegetables.

The IUSTI Laboratory and the Institute of Mechanics and Engineering (IMI) are the R&D partners of the research project led by Benjamin KADOCH, teacher-researcher at Polytech Marseille, aiming to develop a system of autonomous cookers based on concentrated solar energy (Scheffler parabola) with heat storage, allowing to free from the intermittency of the resource.

This digital event, broadcast from a television set on the Luminy campus, offers local stakeholders and the university community the opportunity to discover the uniqueness of the institutes of higher education and their positioning on the Aix-Marseille site.

3 round tables, introduced by the President of the university Eric Berton and coordinated by the Vice-President Maryline Crivello: In three 20-minute sessions, representatives of institutes and socio-economic partners will review the key issues around which the institutes are positioned: the challenges of interdisciplinarity, the sharing of expertise, research and innovation, the attractiveness of university training, links with the territory, the response to societal issues, and support for decision-makers in times of multiple crises
