The "Data and New Narrations" committee brings together skills, means, data and platforms, in collaboration with universities and research centres abroad, partners of the "Mediterranean Societies in Transition" (SoMuM) Institute which have developed an expertise in Mediterranean Studies.

Data and New Narrations in the Humanities and Social Sciences

In this context, the Institute "Mediterranean Societies in Transition" (SoMuM) is reflecting on the processing and analysis of data accompanied by new tools and mixed methods, in collaboration with the very large research infrastructures Huma-Num and Progedo. Support is given to digital platforms for the production, conservation and archiving of quantitative resources and data hosted by the Maison méditerranéenne des sciences de l'Homme: the Observatoire Démographique de la Méditerranée, and the Plateforme Universitaire de Données d'Aix-Marseille Université pour les études méditerranéennes.

The committee has two main tasks:

1. A mission to support research: to create the conditions for data sharing and truly collaborative research, in particular between the North and South of the Mediterranean extended to Africa.

  • Developing new tools and new mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative, archives and new technology, text and image)
  • Using big data in the Social Sciences without losing sight of the associated ethical issues
  • Supporting data and visualization platforms in the Humanities and Social Sciences

2. A training mission: to set up training courses intended primarily for Master's and doctoral students, on the theme "From data to new forms of narration" in partnership with quantitative, cartographic and digital data platforms:

  • Training Seminars and Summer Schools on Data Processing in the Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Introduction to the notion of open science
  • Knowledge of major data repositories
  • Presentation of the collections dedicated to the Mediterranean
  • Constitution of corpora
  • Treatment of sources and methodologies
