About the Mediterranean Archaeology Institute (ARKAIA)

At Aix-Marseille University, archaeology has been a field of excellence recognised for several decades both nationally and internationally, supported by actions focused on the entire Mediterranean area.

Inaugurated in 2020, the ARKAIA Mediterranean Archaeology Institute is a focal point for the convergence of research and training skills in archaeology and archaeosciences brought together at Aix-Marseille University. It examines Mediterranean areas in diachronicity, from prehistory to recent periods, by bringing together the material and human capacities of the archaeology laboratories of the Maison méditerranéenne des sciences de l'homme and the teams developing innovative approaches in bio- and geosciences (paleoenvironments and paleoclimates, geochemistry, dating...), biological anthropology and engineering sciences and techniques (3D, acoustics, robotics...).
