Aix-Marseille Université's theatre house

A flagship project of Aix-Marseille University, innovative and interdisciplinary, the Maison du Théâtre aims to ensure synergy between training and research in the field of theatre in order to make it a sector of excellence of the institution. It is based on the original articulation between research and creation, in conjunction with the territory's artistic partners, and is a major societal issue.

1. Presentation

The Maison du Théâtre d'Aix-Marseille Université is unique and unpublished on the national territory. It has been made possible by the specific wealth of its region (Marseille, France's second largest city in terms of the number of theatre venues and the Bouches-du-Rhône, the largest department outside the Paris region), as well as by the exceptional number of its researchers, lecturers and teachers, at least one of whose work is related to the theatre. It promotes the actions carried out within the AMU laboratories and generates new projects. It was validated on 24 July 2017 and the Maison du Théâtre mission statement was presented on 24 October 2017 to the AMU Board of Directors.

The Maison du Théâtre has more than fifty associate members: researchers, teacher-researchers and teachers, divided into 14 laboratories (CIELAM, LESA, LERMA, CAER, UMR IrAsia, ECHANGES, UMR TDMAM, UMR Centre Camille Jullian, UMR IMAF, LID2MS, UMR GREQAM, UMR PRISM, UMR ISM, ADEF), and 7 components (Faculty of Arts, Letters, Languages and Human Sciences, Mediterranean House of Human Sciences, Faculty of Law and Political Science, Faculty of Economics and Management, Sciences, Faculty of Sport Sciences, Higher School of Education) in a strong interdisciplinary perspective: literary scholars, theatre historians, theatre practitioners and aestheticians, translators, archaeologists, courseacticians, specialists in sound and image on stage, specialists in movement on stage, jurists, economists, etc.

The Maison du Théâtre's research activities have a broad impact on the general public: the Rencontres de la Maison du Théâtre, the POTEAC Seminar ("Poetics and technique of acting: heritage, innovation, globalisation") and AMU's International Theatre Week, a recurring annual event.
