The Archimedes Institute offers financing and co-financing of doctoral contracts in mathematics or computer science for a period of one to three academic years for high-level students. Interdisciplinary thesis subjects are encouraged, in connection with at least one of these two disciplines.
The institute is also developing thematic calls, this year in Artificial Intelligence.

Fields of research

Generic call: In collaboration with ED184, the Archimedes Institute proposes 8 doctoral contracts in the following themes

  • analysis, modeling, optimization,
  • statistics, signal processing, machine learning,
  • dynamic systems, geometry, probabilities,
  • algorithmic, logic, number theory.

Contracts will be awarded to carry out research under the direction of at least one member of ED 184, who is also a member of one of the research units of the Archimedes Institute :

  • Centre for Theoretical Physics (CPT),
  • Institut de Mathématiques de Marseille (I2M),
  • Computer Science and Systems Laboratory (LIS).

Thematic call IA

The Archimedes Institute offers 2 doctoral contracts in co-financing in the Artificial Intelligence and Language, Communication and Brain theme.

Funding

Funding is valid for doctoral students for 1 to 3 years of study in Marseille. The net monthly salary is according to the AMU grid.

Application Form

Applications should include:

  • the thesis project (maximum two pages), including the title, the name of the director and the host laboratory,
  • the candidate's CV, (max. 2 pages)
  • Master 2 certificate, transcripts of M1 and M2 grades (if available)
  • a letter of motivation (commitment to the doctoral program, choice of thesis subject)
  • For the thematic call only: Two letters of recommendation (in case of co-direction of a thesis, one letter must be written by the co-director outside the institute)

Application to the thematic call implies application to the generic call without the need to submit two applications.

Generic Call

The files thus constituted are to be sent to direction-ed184@lis-lab.fr (with the director of the laboratory as a copy) in 1 single file in pdf format entitled in the name of the candidate → Name.pdf (ATTENTION: no accents in the file title please).

Thematic Call

Indicate clearly at the top of the file that it is an application for the thematic call. The files thus constituted should be sent to direction-ed184@lis-lab.fr (with the director of the laboratory as a copy) in 1 single file in pdf format entitled in the name of the candidate → Name.pdf (WARNING: no accents in the file title please).

Both letters of recommendation should be sent directly to us by the authors by e-mail in PDF format, titled on behalf of the candidate_Name of the referee → Name_Name.pdf (ATTENTION: no accents in the file title please) to institut-archimede@univ-amu.fr.

Deadline for application

PLEASE NOTE: these dates may vary depending on the current situation. All information is available on the labex-archimede.univ-amu.fr website.
Applications must be completed before 04 May 2020, 23:59 Paris time (including letters of recommendation).

Results

Candidates selected by the pre-selection will be informed on May 15 and contacted for an interview (telephone or video) between May 18 and 20. The final results of the thematic call will be announced on May 27th and those of the generic call at the end of June. Winners will have to confirm their acceptance of the doctoral contract within a week.
