How are higher education studies organized?

In France, university studies are organized around three degrees: Licence-Master-Doctorat, a university system common to all European countries. Each academic year is divided into two semesters.

• The Licence (L1, L2, L3) is awarded after six semesters of study, i.e. three years after the baccalauréat.
• The Master's degree (M1, M2) is awarded after four semesters of study, or two years, after validation of a Bachelor's degree (a total of five years' study).
• The doctorate is awarded after six semesters, i.e. three years after the master's degree.
• The BUT (university bachelor of technology) is prepared in three years after the baccalauréat.
• The LP (licence professionnelle) is prepared in one year after obtaining a Bac + 2 diploma.
• The title of engineer is awarded in five years and leads to the grade of master.

Can I change direction during the year?

It is possible to change direction as early as the first semester of the bachelor's degree. In fact, there are a number of gateway systems from a bachelor's degree to other courses (DUT, BTS, depending on agreements between establishments). Some establishments also offer staggered start dates in January and February.

Under certain conditions, you may be eligible for a grant based on social criteria and/or accommodation in a hall of residence. To do so, you'll need to put together a file called DSE (dossier social étudiant). From the CROUS (Centre régional des œuvres universitaires et scolaires) in your area. Applications must be renewed every year.
