Questioning one's origins, from migratory narratives to family secrets - SoMuM Institute's fall conference

The Sociétés en Mutation en Méditerranée (SoMuM) Institute is organising its first conference of the year, focusing on the question of origins. It will bring together two researchers, Valérie Feschet, anthropologist at IDEMEC, and Virginie Baby-Collin, geographer and member of TELEMMe. Based on their respective fields, their papers will address the methodological problems posed to social science research by the entry into the intimacy of families and the analysis of the narrative of origins.

Based on her work on the structures of kinship, filiation and begetting, Valérie Feschet's paper will explore what the revelation of concealed paternities does to individuals and how it contributes to rethinking family genealogies, between biological inheritance and social construction. The family ecosystem will also be scrutinized through the prism of multisituated experiences. What narrative of origins does mobility produce? How does it contribute to the construction of complex identities? The family will be considered in its transnational dimension by Virginie Baby-Collin, a specialist in migration, in Les métamorphoses contemporaines de la parentalité et de la filiation (Irène Théry, 2014).
