The WITGAF 2019 Summer School on Fluid Mechanics Applied to Geophysics and Astrophysics, supported by the A*Midex Foundation, was held from 8 to 20 July 2019 in Cargèse, Corsica.

Third in a series of conferences in fluid mechanics, the summer school "Waves, Instabilities and Turbulence in Geophysical and Astrophysical Flows" (WITGAF 2019) brought together international experts from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France and many others for two weeks at the Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques de Cargèse.

Organized by the IRPHE, Mixed Research Unit of Aix-Marseille University, CNRS and Centrale Marseille, under the responsibility of Mr Stéphane Le Dizès, Director of Research at CNRS and Director of the IRPHE, WITGAF 2019 brought together geophysical and astrophysical fluid dynamics specialists, researchers and students to share and explore fundamental knowledge of fluid mechanics and the latest developments in research on waves, instabilities and turbulence in oceans, atmospheres, planetary and stellar cores, and accretion disks.55 doctoral and post-doctoral students, 25 researchers and teacher-researchers, from 15 different countries attended the courses given by the 15 guest lecturers at this summer school. The course materials are now available on the school's website. The main results will also be published as articles in a special issue of the scientific journal Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics (ed. Taylor & Francis) during the year 2020. Following the success of this third edition, a fourth edition is planned for 2022.

WITGAF 2019 has received support from the A*Midex Foundation to the tune of 20,000 euros as part of its international actions, and co-financing of 10,000 euros from the CNRS as part of its Thematic Schools call. One of the objectives of the A*Midex Foundation is to support the development of summer schools of international stature, and thus promote the expertise of the Aix-Marseille site internationally.
