1st year-M1

Description of the study tracks supported by the Graduate School within the Master in Physics.

The IPhU master’s program is divided into four tracks :
•    The stars, galaxies & cosmology track
•    The relativistic theoretical physics track
•    The particles & high energy universe track
•    The instrument scientist track


The student is enrolled in one of these tracks. Lectures are part of the Master of Physics in Fundamental Physics  active link where the syllabus of each of the courses can be found as well.
 

For the 1st Master year (M1): core courses are compulsory and specialized courses can be chosen among a limited selection. Most of the lectures will take place on the Saint-Charles campus.
Semester 1 (30 ECTS) [all courses are mandatory for all tracks]. Study tracks start from semester 2
•    statistical physics (6 ECTS)
•    quantum mechanics semester 1 (6 ECTS)
•    mathematics for physics (4 ECTS)
•    electromagnetism and optics (4 ECTS)
•    numerical methods and laboratory work (4 ECTS)
•    scientific watch (2 ECTS)
•    professional unit -LaTeX, Python for experimentation (2 ECTS)
•    language (French or English) (2 ECTS)

Study tracks start from semester 2 (30 ECTS)
Beside the general mandatory classes:
•    numerical methods and laboratory work  (4 ECTS)
•    internship (7-week long) (4 ECTS)
•    scientific watch (2 ECTS)
•    professional unit (2 ECTS)
•    language (French or English) (2 ECTS)
courses can be chosen to follow one of the four study tracks.
 

The stars, galaxies & cosmology track

The relativistic theoretical physics track
Core courses (4 ECTS each) :

•    Méthodes Mathématiques Avancées / Advanced Mathematical Methods

•    Systèmes Dynamiques / Dynamical Systems
•    Physique des Particules, Physique subatomique / Subatomic and Particle Physics
•    Cosmologie / Cosmology + related projects in astrophysics I
•    Milieux Continus / Continuous Media
•    Matière Condensée / Condensed Matter Physics
•    Statistique et Analyse de Données / Statistics and Data Analysis.


The particles & high energy universe track
Core courses (4 ECTS each) :
•    Physique des Particules, Physique subatomique / Subatomic and Particle Physics
•    Statistique et Analyse de Données / Statistics and Data Analysis

The instrument scientist track
