Field School POLLUTION AND MIXED MATERIALS (SOIL-WATER and ATMOSPHERE)

Context

The "POLEMIL" field school is a laureate of the "Schools of Transition" section of the 2020 Call for Projects of the ITEM Institute. This component finances innovative pedagogical actions for master or doctoral students, staff or professionals outside the institution in the framework of continuing education.

Summary

The POLEMIL field school has two themes: "SOIL-WATER" and "ATMOSPHERE-FLOWING LANDS interactions".

The concrete implementation of the environmental transition requires the training of students not only through fundamental knowledge in the disciplines of environmental sciences (human and social sciences, law, geography, ecology, pedology, chemistry, physics), but also through the practical implementation of these fundamental knowledge in the field. Today's environmental engineer must no longer compartmentalize his or her skills but rather apply them transversally, taking into account regulatory constraints and the socio-economic context. One of his roles is to contribute to the harmonious development of society through a reasoned use of renewable and non-renewable resources (in our case air, water and soil). This requires a holistic vision of the environmental issues that may arise when it comes to arbitrating the use and considering the remediation of environments under strong anthropic pressure and/or degraded.

The POLEMIL field school is part of the context described above and aims to develop students' cross-disciplinary skills from their first year of the Master's programme on three high-stake environmental issues, particularly in relation to the urbanisation and increasing anthropisation of Mediterranean coasts: management of neglected sites under strong anthropic pressure, including remediation ("SOL" theme), impact of industrial discharges on the Mediterranean environment ("WATER" theme), and the role of plants in relation to atmospheric pollution ("ATMO" theme) These three themes will be developed on 3 workshop sites located in the urban and peri-urban environment of Marseille and its surroundings. These three themes are common objects of concern throughout the Mediterranean basin, which is why this school is open to our Tunisian and Lebanese academic partners. They are part of the "Resource management for an environmental transition" axis via contamination approaches (the three themes) but also address the recyclability of the resource (SOL theme) and contribute to the "Environment and health" theme (WATER and ATMO themes). Axis 1 Analysis of socio-environmental changes for a transition strategy is partially addressed in the SOL theme via a reflection on the use of open spaces in urban areas and the maintenance of water resources via the infiltration capacity of soils and the control and maintenance of water quality. The students will be able to work for 2 weeks on concrete cases chosen in such a way as to offer the maximum opportunity for reflection and experimentation for the resolution of concrete cases.

Public targeted by the event

The POLEMIL field school is aimed at students in continuing education spread over 4 masters, 2 of which are international (AMU-UFTAM-UTM-UCAR and AMU-USEK partnerships).
The field school is open to doctoral students of the ED 251 (Environmental Sciences).
